PoV: There's no need to revive the Guitar Hero franchise

Activision seems to have backtracked from their previous statement concerning the faith of the Guitar Hero franchise, as they are now saying that the series is only on a "hiatus."

Speaking in a recent interview conducted by GameIndustry.biz, Activision’s Dan Winters said that the “Guitar Hero” franchise hasn't bitten the dust yet.

“Actually, just to clarify, we’re just putting Guitar Hero on hiatus, we’re not ending it,” Winters said. “We’re releasing products out of the vault – we’ll continue to sustain the channel, the brand won’t go away. We’re just not making a new one for next year, that’s all.”

Winters statement clearly conflicts what the firm said just two months ago on their financial report that made many of us to believe that they have actually canceled the franchise for good. “At the same time, due to continued declines in the music genre, the company will disband Activision Publishing’s ‘Guitar Hero’ business unit and discontinue development on its ‘Guitar Hero’ game for 2011.”

Looks to me like Activision realized that they can still make money from bringing back the franchise later on instead of creating quality games. Unless they can come up with something original, I think they should stop milking the Guitar Hero franchise who clearly fell under its own weight since Activision took control of the brand by realising numerous spin-offs when they could have packaged it all together as downloadable contents.

How about you guys? Would you like to see another Guitar Hero game in the future? Share your thoughts below or continue the discussions at the forums.

maybe that is the way to make money AND a quaity GH game - wait a year and release one good game, instead of releasing 4 or 5 rehashes per year. They already have an audience - why abandon it? just give it a really good product.

I do remember reading them stating it was only for next year, but whatever.

Oh yea, and as many peopla have said before, keep your thoughts out of the articles, it makes it seem like you're just a 12 year old kid blogging about video games.

I do agree on your Point of view though.

Neh, it's a fad just like dance mats that's on it's inevitable decline and when developers figure out how to make good games for Kinect and Move it'll be too late for GH, plus the Wii successor's due and you gotta see what they can come up with first.

I think people are over these games. Mostly over having to constantly update the expensive controllers to get the "new cool stuff".
