PoV: Teaser sites and countdown clocks |
Listed in: PS3 Tags: Capcom, front mission evolved, Konami, metal gear solid: rising, Square Enix
Capcom has a new teaser site up. The clock on it is still counting down, but recent reports already think it's for a game called Dragon's Dogma. A lot of companies, both gaming-related and otherwise, have been churning out teasers for their upcoming releases and products for years now. Teaser sites, in particular, have become a gaming industry staple ever since the internet became easily accessible to the public.
These range from simple countdowns on a plain background to more elaborate ones like the teaser site that Konami put together for Metal Gear Solid: Rising a couple of years back. That and the Front Mission Evolved teaser from Square Enix are the only two I can pull from recent memory that I actually paid attention to, even though when the latter went fully live I was severely disappointed.

Sometimes these teasers work. The Metal Gear Solid: Rising one in particular had a lot of people eagerly searching for clues hidden in the site's imagery, me included. Teasers from high-profile companies tend to get this level of attention a lot more than those from smaller, niche publishers and developers. They do generate interest, but do they really make people sit around and wait for the countdown to finish?
Personally, I don't think they do. With the exception of the hardcore, I think a lot of people tend to spend a few minutes trying to decipher what they're for before forgetting about them until the official announcement comes out. I, for one, keep forgetting to check whether the clock has run out or not. I never bookmark them, seeing them only as a pleasant yet short-lived distaction. Pretty much just like almost everything on the internet.
