Early beta access to the multiplayer component of SOCOM 4: US Navy Seals has been available for PlayStation Plus subscribers for weeks now, giving players a glimpse of what to expect from Zipper Interactive's next title.
The multiplayer beta isn't 100% open to players, but it does allow various cooperative matches to be played on several maps. Like most online shooters, SOCOM 4 splits players into two different teams: the U.S. and the Insurgents. The different teams don't offer varying gameplay mechanics, but players will be able to select from several different team specific skins before the match begins.
SOCOM 4 is a third person shooter similar to the Gears of War series, and that fact alone made me weary to play it; however, due to the fast paced combat and strategic maps, I quickly found enjoyment in this beta -- I haven't had this much fun with a third person shooter since Uncharted 2.
Out of all the matches online I've played, I have never once experienced problems with lag. Hit detection is also fantastic in the beta, which is a testament to how much hard work Zipper has put into this game. At times, though, I feel like it's a little bit too easy to take out an enemy, as I'm able to get an easy kill by tapping the right trigger twice.
The only game modes available in the beta -- there will be more in the actual game -- are ones that have each team either defending or defusing explosives. I prefer defending explosives much rather than attacking, since I was able to set myself up high behind a small fence and take approaching enemies out with the game's cover system. The cover system itself isn't as dynamic as Uncharted 2's, but it definitely adds to the game's value.
There was one issue with the beta that appeared numerous times, sadly. Whenever my character was close to a wall or in a narrow passage, the camera would mess up and only show the character's head and the aiming reticule. This is more of a problem with third person shooters in general, but hopefully Zipper is able to work out some sort of fix for it.
