PoV: Publishers need to stop making new sports games every year |
Listed in: PS3 Tags: 2K Sports, Electronic Arts, Madden, take two

Take for example EA's Madden NFL series. Every year, it feels like the same game. The only major difference is the new rosters with very little changes, all rolled up and repacked for a new season.
There's also 2K Sports' NBA 2K series. Last year's iteration was so damn good that 2K could just easily release a DLC for a roster update. But as the tradition implies, another iteration of the franchise is slated to hit this October. The only problem this year is the upcoming 2011-2012 NBA season is curently stuck in an ongoing labor dispute between owners and players. A problem which could affect the sales of NBA 2K12 and could cost 2K Sports millions if not resolved.
"We are conservatively modeling 4.5M units for the title in FY12 (NBA 2K11 has sold-in more than 5.5M units to date)," according to the forecast made by Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia. "The company’s viewpoint, however, is that the uniqueness of its upcoming NBA title could conceivably protect it from historically negative trends during a lockout," he noted.
While NBA 2K12 may offer something unique, I think last year's iteration still has lot to offer. 2K Sports could just sell a roster / uniform / commentary update and it's still a good game.

Finally someone shares my opinion on sport games!

Also no one is forcing you to buy, as far as I'm concern as long as it is PES/Winning 11 or a PC sports game the roster is updatable via mods.

But it is true that most of the carbon copies that are released every year could do with a roster/commentary update.
Especially these days, when they can pretty much release a new game through DLC I.E. GTAIV. It should be easy enough to have a payed DLC that includes accurate rosters, commentaries, maybe new game modes, new Create-A-Player options, etc...
It seems like every game that is put out is going to be the final version of itself and they have to renew it every year because they are afraid of what might happen, it's been like this for almost 20 years.

That's exactly the point. Plus, over time they do get better and better.
Should car manufactures quit making new cars every year? After all they keep churning out the same 4 wheel models over and over and over again.
It's not so simple to just claim they should DLC new content as not everyone has a console connected to the internet however, choice would be nice.

madden is what u really talkin about same game as it was 4 the past 3years or so what im tired of jus like many game companies they always dont listen 2 who help sale there product. last year we wanted more n the franchise so they only addressed team up this year they only addressed offline franchise instead of online franchise which alot of people still play beyond nfl season.
it would had been good if offline franchise u can have up2 10 people u can play offline n ur franchise. ok u offline an ur friend or friends can invite u 2 play n ur offline franchise followed wit there trades an etc. now when they leave all trades wit that team go back..jus a thought.
but jus 4 EA 2 say well its more offline franchise play than online play its bs all EA do is put n an take away every year. jus like alot of game companies they try 2 make online play easy 4 every1 its getting 2 the point where u dont need any skill to play hell devs might as well make it a 1button game. then u have all shooter games bein the same way jus like movies either remakes an or the same movie what happened 2 b'n original
