PoV: Not every game needs multiplayer
|
|
Most publishers nowadays seems to force multiplayer onto their games, which more often than not, doesn't suit the experience.

Gearbox Software‘s president Randy Pitchford has recently voiced out his opinion regarding the recent trend in the video game industry - publishers and their multiplayer obsession. In a recent interview with EDGE Magazine, Pitchford said that many publishers are forcing multiplayer modes into their to games to compete with blockbuster titles like Call of Duty.
“Let’s forget about what the actual promise of a game is and whether it’s suited to a narrative or competitive experience,” he said. “Take that off the table for a minute and just think about the concept-free feature list: campaign, co-op, how many players? How many guns? How long is the campaign?
“When you boil it down to that, you take the ability to make good decisions out of the picture. And the reason they do it is because they notice that the biggest blockbusters offer a little bit for every kind of consumer. You have people that want co-op and competitive, and players who want to immerse themselves in deep fiction. But the concept has to speak to that automatically; it can’t be forced. That’s the problem.”
He continued: “When the publisher is thinking, ‘When I put my money in, I don’t know what’s going to come out, but I know what I want the low and high numbers to be and I want the high number to be as high as possible’, fundamentally he’s gambling,” Pitchford says. “He’s a money guy, he has no creative investment. He’s putting money on the table and wants a return. For him, the worst-case scenario is that he just gets it back.”
Using EA's Dead Space series as an example, Pitchford says: “It’s ceiling-limited; it’ll never do 20 million units. The best imaginable is a peak of four or five million units if everything works perfectly in your favour. So the bean counters go: ‘How do I get a higher ceiling?’ And they look at games that have multiplayer.
“They’re wrong, of course. What they should do instead is say that they’re comfortable with the ceiling, and get as close to the ceiling as possible. Put in whatever investment’s required to focus it on what the promise is all about.”
There was a time where multiplayer was a great addition to the single player campaign. Now, more often than not, it's the major selling point of the game. With the cost of developing games skyrocketing, publishers are desperate for new ways to add value on their games and adding multiplayer certainly fits the bill but in the process, they are also putting less effort into the stories and more time into the online mode just to try and get more sales. When there is a need for multiplayer, then do so, but if not, they should focused more on maintaining the quality of games that fans love. After all, there's nothing wrong with playing an 8 hour campaign if you know that the devs have poured all their efforts to make the single player experience worthwhile.
How about you guys? Do you agree with Pitchford's statement? Any games on your mind that you feel aren't suited to have a multiplayer mode? share your comments below or continue the discussion at the forums.

BOOM|HEADSHOT
I'm tired of people complaining about multiplayer in games. Just don't use it, as easy as that. USe your little head to imagine it's not even there and enjoy your single player game.

Why pay full price for a game you will finish in 1 evening?
Would you pay $100 to see a movie at the cinema? No, then why are you paying full price for half a game?
When I buy a game I'm buying it for the single player mode.
If I have to buy extra DLC thats already on the disc then thats an extra $20 less it should cost me as thats what the DLC usually costs.
Then the gameplay is usually half of the first version so it should again cost half of what the first version costs.
(I'm talking about sequels here. Take Assassins Creed here, the first was great, the 2nd was a little bigger then the 3rd was smaller than the first. I expect to pay less for the 3rd than the 1st as its smaller)
Probably smaller as they put in Multiplayer mode instead of a better singleplayer mode.
I think they should put more effort into Single player mode and make a longer and better story. Also LESS movies. I'm wanting to play a game not watch a movie. If I wanted to watch a movie I wouldn't be playing a game right.
And, less DRM. All that does is punish the legit buyer and making more people pirate games.
Just remember, pirate versions don't have DRM so they aren't being punished.
So, if he's saying multiplayer ruins games then I will agree. It's like instead of a 100% game they are removing 40% and replacing it with multiplayer. Thats why games these days are so small and not as much fun as games were 10 years ago.

Socom is a good example for this, i finished the story in under 5 hours! However the online is supposed to be good, but i haven't had the chance to jump on it due to the PSN blackout :l

I got Socom 4 and the next day it was finished. :( I'm sure Socom 1 took at least a week to finish and 2 took a few weeks.
Halo.... What can I say about Halo... BORING.
The last 2 halo games were like skirmish games.
They try to make singleplayer out of multiplayer. Doesn't work. I didn't like Halo anyway but they destroyed it by focusing on multiplayer and forgetting about Singleplayer mode.
The halo series is for people that don't like games. If your a kid and like to kill things then play halo. If your a gamer then you know better than to play halo.
Another is Call Of Duty. It started as a great game, then multiplayer came along and ruined a good game.
If you play COD:BO quick it can be finished in about 3-4 hours.
I'm not going to pay $80AUD for a 4 hour game. F! THAT! Do you really think any game is worth that? LOL for 4 hours I'll pay $30 MAX.
Uncharted 1 and 2 were both great. Lets hope 3 isn't multiplayer focused and still a great game. If they remove multiplayer completely and just focused on singleplayer then that'll be even better.

Game devs should make a full singleplayer game.
Then release multiplayer as DLC.
That way they have a great game and only those that want multiplayer pay for it.
Hopefully this way they still have a great singleplayer game without the burden of multiplayer.
Games like Assassins Creed where you have a singleplayer game and a totally separate multiplayer game is a ok as long as the singleplayer game isn't cut down to let the multiplayer part fit.
Another good example is Medal Of Honor. The singleplayer and multiplayer are 2 completely different games. They run 2 different engines. BUT as this is the case they shrunk singleplayer to make the multiplayer fit in the game too. Multiplayer in this case should be a separate disc then it would've had enough room to have a decent singleplayer mode which is didn't. It was good but still too short.

I for one would not be downloading the multiplayer DLC so thats -1 for multiplayer.
All they would have to do is see how many copies sell then how many DLC sell and then get the percentage of multiplayer customers.

Black Ops is a perfect case of this, i dont think i've ever had a single match where the games ran in synch, i usually drop dead, then my corpse gets moved a few feet from i was standing, but actually wasnt...
and they have the nerve to say to "expect some minor lag issues" okay fine but every fucking match?!?! i dont recall Modern Warfare 2 being any near as lag infested as Black Ops!
so long as it just a quick add on, people will continue to get angry about it, i prefer single player any day, cos the console cant lag me to death, there are no stupid people who dont listen and understand the word "team" and no hackers to piss me off.

It sucks nowadays that I pay for games and half the cost is going into features I'll never use. I wish more games just worried about single player campaign/plot. I felt burned a bit paying 60 bucks for Starcraft 2/Portal 2 when most the hype was about multiplayer/co-op. It would be cool if there was a way to buy singleplayer/multiplayer separately. Then if you wanted the plot and single player you had it and if you just wanted the multiplayer you could have it too. Oh and before everyone freaks out yes I know this would never happen.
