PoV: Next console generation can wait 3-5 more years

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot recently stated that the five year cycle of this console generation has already worn out, and the lack of new hardware is beginning to hold back the industry.

game-consoles1

"At this stage in the consoles’ lifecycles it is possible to do new IP, but it will be more attractive when new consoles come along," he said. "That’s when consumers are more open to trying new things.

"As consoles get more mature it is the big established brands that soak up most of the sales. When a new format launches, we look to use the new technology to bring new games and new ideas to our consumers. We would always hope to be more successful on new formats than our competitors.

He also said that consoles are becoming out of date and that's why the industry is in a slump: "Processors are more and more powerful, graphics cards have moved on, there are many technologies that would help us deliver a better experience and help the industry to grow.

"That’s part of the reason why the industry is in depression. Consumers like the current formats, but there is not enough creativity at the end of a cycle to really spark the business."

While he may have a valid point regarding the technology, game developer's need to focus more on gameplay. There's still plenty of room left to squeeze in these current gen platforms to innovate and not just rehash their old money making IPs.

you pretty much answered your question.
if they can't handle this generation and/or barely doing anything with it, they need to do something about that first before releasing more consoles.

I believe that the next generation should wait another 3-5 years, too! Unless there is some super advanced technology that is revealed. Sony already was thinking about the future with Blu-Ray and 3D stereoscopy. Perhaps the Wii will get an HD update and the 360 will get a major hardware revision, but nothing that prevents new 360 or Wii games being played on the first 360 or Wii.

How can them make a major hardware revised xbox 360 and then make new games that use the full potential of this new xbos but still make it possible to run on the old xbos that had less power.

Sorry for any confusion, but I meant if they added Blu-Ray discs for 360, they would have more room and could still offer the games on standard DVD or maybe just XBL download.
Also, adding in hardware for 3D like the PS3 has would not make the game non-compatible with the first XBox.

About the disc size, micro$oft has changed the game's disc structure and they gained around 1GB of space.

Microsoft will NEVER get rights to use Blu-Ray Discs, Sony licensed it so its theirs. And if they are at a Console war with Microsoft, they wouldn't give them the upper hand.

Same reason as to why Microsoft won't give Sony rights to use NTFS HDDs in the PS3, they don't wanna give Sony the upper hand.

PS3 uses a FAT32 HDD, which can only read and write 4gb of data per file at a time. If you have a MP4 movie thats over 4 gigs, you gotta split the movie into two parts for the PS3. If you were to transfer a MP4 movie over 4 gigs to an XBOX360, you can do so without splitting the file into parts.

Microsoft is going to have to come out with their own Disc Format, like they did with HD DVDs (but failed), if they want to fit more data on a disc for their next home console.

Which made me assume they would use HD DVD format for their games when I first read they were gonna have a new disc format. (Not thinking that they would just clean up the file structure of the existing DVD's.)

first thing that came to mind...
maybe the way the pc works. except instead of being able to choose settings the game has two different gfx settings one for the old 360 one for the new.

Yeah, this could definitely work. Or have files that add extra texture and stuff that only the newer XBox can access.

Yeah, I knew of that, but 1 GB doesn't help with games like Final Fantasy that is 3 discs.

agree, its more like recycled fun, a bunch of studios , big budgets, same old story, same old engine, same old crap, they dont need creativity they want to make the next sequel, selling parts of the story so that people buy it have their high and then what else what then, recylce...

I'm guessing they will do it early at around 2013. Probably by the end of 2013.

Processing power isn't quite relevant just yet. Most gamers don't get hard-ons over new and improved shaders, we just want games that are enjoyable. FFVI is still one of my favourite games of all time, and I wasn't even old enough to understand what games were when that game came out!

Sure my 360 is getting a bit tired and the Wii is certainly at the end of the road, but the PS3 hasn't been pushed at all.
I can't see Sony jumping to new hardware for at least 3 more years, MS will probably wait til E3 2012 for a replacement announcement. The Wii2/HD will be there this year, could make a christmas Japan release, more likely a world release in 2012 itself.

All good though, I love new hardware!

By Nintendo standards, it will probably be in HD, but don't think they'll bother with 1080p as 720p will be enough for them, and us.

If I truly want to see glorify 1080p rather watch a Blu-ray film/series.

Do need new consoles, need new video games.

The graphic cards of PS3/X360 are old but still produce pretty good graphics.

I don't think I'll bother buying a new console when it comes out, PS3 and Xbox 360 do what I want.

What I hope to see with the next generation of consoles is something that stops this from happening. There is no reason, I cannot remove the graphics card from my PS3 and replace it with a better one. Like with PC gaming, if I have the money, I should be able to upgrade. Now I am stuck, in between wanting a game like BF3 for PC graphics and scale wise with 64 players, but not wanting to game on my PC. Just implement low, standard and high settings on the consoles. That way devs can develop for higher standards and not "Consolize" the game.

I have no idea why nobody has suggested this yet...

Like many I like the easy to use, simple menu system, and the fact that the system, is used solely for gaming, but it needs to have these options.

so in other words, you don't want to game on your PC, you just want to turn your console INTO a PC?

Yeah, this is definitely a bad idea. I don't want to have to buy a game that requires me to buy a new graphics card for a game system. That's bogus. Both game systems have great graphics that don't need to be updated like a harddrive. How many families would be left out in the dust whenever a game required a kind of update like that? How many people would know what to do? That's why certain people don't play PC games and that's why console gaming will always be around!

#1 You cannot just bolt on a Blu-Ray drive because you will just alienate and piss off 50 million 360 owners.
#2 You cannot just give the 360 more power and have new games on it because you will just alienate and piss off 50 million 360 owners.
People will accept cosmetic and efficiency improvements, but it's an absolute NO! to anyone who thinks it's a good idea to do Pc type upgrades. If they want new games to run on it they need to make a whole new console with new features, and anyway how much is it gonna cost for MS and Sony to put processor and graphics that's much better than what they got now? It will be unaffordable, so i reckon 3-5 years is about right.

But I am talking about graphics cards and such. Just the ability to handle more quality FPS, and graphical capabilities. If the next gen console, was the same thing, and didn't cost so much money, I would agree. But they are going to change everything, make games not compatible, and not come out with the new system for another 3 years. My PS3 has 500 Gigs, why? Because I just removed and installed a new hard drive. Same should be possible with a graphics card and other small enhancing hardware.

Changing your Hdd's no different to plugging a memory card into a Ps1 and going through the menu to format it, obviously all the data's got bigger but still the same, but when they start making consoles where you can upgrade main system components to make only certain games work then instantly it stops being a console and becomes a computer.

Why do we need console wars? So that we can have a diffrent variety of hardware and games.

Imagine if Nintendo had a global monopoly in the console industry. Imagine being stuck with the Wii, with inferior technology, its kids games, and not playing CoD or Halo online. Imagine not being able to watch blu-rays or dvds on your console. No gears of war, mass effect, uncharted, or crysis 2.

We need console wars and launch races for the sake of diverse innovativeness

Blah, this industry has dug itself a major hole that will take a long time to get out of. If Sony releases a new high end console, who cares? The games will be no better then the worst console. Same with Microsoft, then the games wouldn't be any better then the PS3.

Devs, for the most part, build a single game for both consoles and sometimes PC. The game isn't any better then the weakest console.

So...they'll time it right. Neither will release anything until BOTH are ready to release something worthy to be called an upgrade.

Well, it is true that it holds back the industry. The PS3 will get the expansion pack ala N64's ram pack but Xbox 360 I just don't know. That console needs to be put to rest as it is nothing but the embodiment of bad-quality and buyer's remorse.
