PoV: Next console generation can wait 3-5 more years |
Listed in: PS3 Tags: Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony, Ubisoft
Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot recently stated that the five year cycle of this console generation has already worn out, and the lack of new hardware is beginning to hold back the industry.

"At this stage in the consoles’ lifecycles it is possible to do new IP, but it will be more attractive when new consoles come along," he said. "That’s when consumers are more open to trying new things.
"As consoles get more mature it is the big established brands that soak up most of the sales. When a new format launches, we look to use the new technology to bring new games and new ideas to our consumers. We would always hope to be more successful on new formats than our competitors.
He also said that consoles are becoming out of date and that's why the industry is in a slump: "Processors are more and more powerful, graphics cards have moved on, there are many technologies that would help us deliver a better experience and help the industry to grow.
"That’s part of the reason why the industry is in depression. Consumers like the current formats, but there is not enough creativity at the end of a cycle to really spark the business."
While he may have a valid point regarding the technology, game developer's need to focus more on gameplay. There's still plenty of room left to squeeze in these current gen platforms to innovate and not just rehash their old money making IPs.
Are you ready for the next console generation guys? Is it time for a new hardware? Share your thought below or continue the discussion at the forum.

if they can't handle this generation and/or barely doing anything with it, they need to do something about that first before releasing more consoles.

Also, adding in hardware for 3D like the PS3 has would not make the game non-compatible with the first XBox.

Microsoft will NEVER get rights to use Blu-Ray Discs, Sony licensed it so its theirs. And if they are at a Console war with Microsoft, they wouldn't give them the upper hand.
Same reason as to why Microsoft won't give Sony rights to use NTFS HDDs in the PS3, they don't wanna give Sony the upper hand.
PS3 uses a FAT32 HDD, which can only read and write 4gb of data per file at a time. If you have a MP4 movie thats over 4 gigs, you gotta split the movie into two parts for the PS3. If you were to transfer a MP4 movie over 4 gigs to an XBOX360, you can do so without splitting the file into parts.
Microsoft is going to have to come out with their own Disc Format, like they did with HD DVDs (but failed), if they want to fit more data on a disc for their next home console.

first thing that came to mind...
maybe the way the pc works. except instead of being able to choose settings the game has two different gfx settings one for the old 360 one for the new.

Yeah, this could definitely work. Or have files that add extra texture and stuff that only the newer XBox can access.
Quoting John:
Yeah, I knew of that, but 1 GB doesn't help with games like Final Fantasy that is 3 discs.

I can't see Sony jumping to new hardware for at least 3 more years, MS will probably wait til E3 2012 for a replacement announcement. The Wii2/HD will be there this year, could make a christmas Japan release, more likely a world release in 2012 itself.
All good though, I love new hardware!

If I truly want to see glorify 1080p rather watch a Blu-ray film/series.

The graphic cards of PS3/X360 are old but still produce pretty good graphics.
I don't think I'll bother buying a new console when it comes out, PS3 and Xbox 360 do what I want.

When new consoles come out it's the same old fucking story, Microsoft vs Nintendo vs Sony fanboys console war crap.

I have no idea why nobody has suggested this yet...

so in other words, you don't want to game on your PC, you just want to turn your console INTO a PC?

#2 You cannot just give the 360 more power and have new games on it because you will just alienate and piss off 50 million 360 owners.
People will accept cosmetic and efficiency improvements, but it's an absolute NO! to anyone who thinks it's a good idea to do Pc type upgrades. If they want new games to run on it they need to make a whole new console with new features, and anyway how much is it gonna cost for MS and Sony to put processor and graphics that's much better than what they got now? It will be unaffordable, so i reckon 3-5 years is about right.

Imagine if Nintendo had a global monopoly in the console industry. Imagine being stuck with the Wii, with inferior technology, its kids games, and not playing CoD or Halo online. Imagine not being able to watch blu-rays or dvds on your console. No gears of war, mass effect, uncharted, or crysis 2.
We need console wars and launch races for the sake of diverse innovativeness

Devs, for the most part, build a single game for both consoles and sometimes PC. The game isn't any better then the weakest console.
So...they'll time it right. Neither will release anything until BOTH are ready to release something worthy to be called an upgrade.
