PoV: More multiplayer elements may soon seep into single-player games

It can't be denied that social gaming is big nowadays. For good or bad, multiplayer is fast being seen by developers and publishers as an important component in the games they release. Even us steadfast single-player fans may have to contend with it whether we want to or not soon, too, if id Software creative director Tim Willits' predictions come to pass.

Speaking to MCV, Willits shared his belief that in the future, multiplayer elements will eventually find their way to the single-player experience. He's not just talking about massively multiplayer online games, too. The choices one player makes in his playthrough of a single-player campaign may affect another player's own game.

Using the different factions in Bethesda's Fallout games as examples, Willits explained: "If you went off to do something and you're playing through and you made one faction more powerful. Maybe, when your buddy gets there that faction still is. That'd just be cool! If things that you did in your game affected the universe, where you're not necessarily directly competing, but different people's outcomes are affected by what you do."

Let's consider Demon's Souls. What Willits is talking about is especially evident in the game's Bloodstains mechanic, which lets players see the deaths of those who came before them. It's non-intrusive and serves to make the experience both (relatively) easier and more dynamic. What happens in another player's game can directy affect another player's experience without the two of them having to actually meet.

Personally, I don't like the thought of leaving certain elements of my game to be out of my control (or at least can't be manipulated enough so I get a desirable outcome). I totally see the appeal in it, though, and I would definitely love to try it out to see if it suits my tastes. What about you guys?
