1. PoV: Is Sony suffocating itself and its own market?
2. Concessions, but..
Let's take a break first from all the Sony-PSN issues and instead talk about the Sony-what-are-you-doing-releasing-all-these-gadgets-at-one-time scenario.

So, as we all know, they recently announced the PSP 2. And then there's also the Xperia Play. As if those weren't enough, though, they just announced yesterday the smartly-named duo (Sheldon's sarcasm-detector rings off in the distance) of S1 and S2. Both are Android-based gadgets, and both look like items that can already be found in the market. What exactly are you trying to do with this strategy, dear Sony?

ps-tablet-s2

Some have come to Sony's defense, saying that it's actually reasonable since the real product that they're marketing here aren't actually the gadgets, but the PlayStation Suite. Now, pardon me if I will disagree, because it doesn't really make much reasonable sense to me to invest in four kinds of different items for one which could be focused on independently. All at one point in time, too, need I add.

The closest model I could think of would be Apple's, who has so far managed to kill their own products in as soon as one year, and then replace it with a newer model. Of their own. Then again, Apple was able to pull that off because, hey, they're actually the first in the market to come up with those stuff. First with the iPod. Nano. Touch. Shuffle. First with the iPad. 1 and 2. They're doing such a quick turnover of their products, flooding the market with all of them in one time, heck, because they can afford to do so. That's the leverage that Sony currently doesn't have.

lol, so what? it's their decision, it doesn't mean we have to buy it, why criticize them? they're not forcing us to buy it :P

It's actually nice to see what these new gadgets has to offer to the public. If it's crap it will get rejected, if it's good it will get accepted.

Apple were not the first to make mp3 players or tablets.

No, they weren't. However, they were the first to Popularise them. So in the average consumer's eyes, yes, Apple came up with all of this.

they were the first to make a hell lots of money with them :P

btw, i remember the first "digital music player" about... 15-17 years ago? something like that... some guy showed it to me and a few other kids, it was a black device with lots of silver buttons, a bw lcs display, and it holded 10 songs. i was dreaming obout having my own portable casette player, so you realise that thing looked so science-fiction in my eyes, i was drolling for it like hell! and now i have a 160gb classic and when i turn on the music i just forget about the player, is sooo in the background of my mind :))

Apple made MP3 popular, but it was Sony that Made PORTABLE MUSIC POPULAR with the Walkman back in the 70's.

I don't know why anyone would want to watch a movie on "s2" with a big gap in the middle lol.

I've always liked sony. But this could be the beginning of the end. Android tablets are even good. None have been that sucessful. I bet these won't sell at all.

this is not the end of sony. the company is way too big do go down with a failed project. remember aibo, or md? they are failed projects, and yet sony stands.

dont worry about sony. its a hardware company, that specialises in every type of hardware in ur household. sony isnt running out of anything anytime soon. every product sold from sony is worth twice or three times as much as microsoft products sold. and every house hold has one thing or another from sony. and no sony isnt suffocating itself.

Correct. One of two things may happen: they fail, and we point and laugh. Or, they succeed, make more money, and we roll our eyes. Either way, we all move on. (and buy the PSP2 anyway)

that correct, too.
sony simply has the monetary resources to test the market with a new ideea and if it works, then they develop the supporting software/applications for it. if people buy into these two, for example, the solutions for them will simply emerge (if they're not here allready), and they'll even be perfect. though i wouldn't buy one to use it as a remote :P

Suffocating themselves how exactly ?

Don't forget that Sony is a large hardware driven company, it is their job to create hardware. They have hardware ranging from MP3 players to Televisions and Cameras.

So lets look at what you mentioned here, shall we ?
Xperia Play - A phone
NGP - A Handheld Gaming device
S1S2 - A tablet

How are they suffocating themselves with these products? They aren't the same type of products to begin with.

This!

Mabie..
So what if there is iPad already and even more tablet coming... do you think Sony shouldn't enter the tablet market?

... its like saying they don't have to make laptops anymore as the market is flood already.

I think Sony did a good move to tap into the Mobile market..cause either to adapt to market change get left behind.
Those tablets are not for me. unless there is a usb port.

$ony are stupid and do everything wrong.
Instead of hiring security staff they sue them.
Instead of releasing a device everyone wants they remove features from it.

Not the smartest company out there. They are just releasing more hardware so they have more chances to fail.

"Is Sony suffocating itself and its own market?"

Why stop there?

Is Sony suffocating itself in the TV market?

Is Sony suffocating itself in the DVD market?

Is Sony suffocating itself in the movies market?

Is Sony suffocating itself in the phone market?

Seriously?

Success is not something which one can steal easily.

If a company is able to step into an existing market and stay afloat and maintain a competitive position within that market, releasing products which are maybe better than the current market ruler then doesn't that mean that that company is doing a good job ?

Creating a shoddy copy of a successful product won't get any company anywhere but improving on an existing product is just a company doing what it is supposed to do.

If you don't like Sony, be happy that if they create a shoddy product, people won't buy it. However if they create decent products, keep your prejudices about the company to yourself.

People now a days shop Sony for the brand name more so cause it is suppose to stand for qaulity, sadly this is not the best reason alone to buy products. Sadly Sony has not stood for high end qaulity products in a long time, yet people still flock in droves to there stores. Sony now a days is best for there gaming market and even at the current moment is having problems.

don't kid yourself! you talk like there's no top quality in sony's products, well there is. the problem may not be quality, but accessibility to it, and we know sony doesn't come cheap.
there is actually a paradox into this: the Alpha900/850. at their time they were the cheapest full frame dslr cameras above 20mp on launch, and that's alot coming from sony, who is usually expensive at the top specs.

"S1 looks like the iPad, which shouldn't be too bad in itself, except that, omigod we already have the iPad."

And with that attitude Apple can charge you any price they choose for the damn thing and you will pay it because it says iPad in the name. It's all about competition. The more the better.

Everyone's thinking too hard about this... They don't have some "specific strategy", Sony is merely a company. They do what any other company does; release products in the hope that they'll do well in the market. Sony makes everything from laptops to TVs, to game consoles and phones.

It's called diversifying your portfolio. Gives you a greater chance of success. Sony actually can afford to take these risks.

of course it doesn't make sense to you dumb bitch. that's why they make millions every week and you write poor quality articles on the internet...

I'm sorry for the language, but all I've been hearing from you, Mabie A., is constant bashing of Sony. Now, i am not a fanboy, but i can clearly see your articles are biased and have lost any credibility they had...

This is without a doubt one of the worse piece of crap of a writing i have ever read. Did you get all of your opinion out of your butt hole or you actually get this from a talking monkey somewhere?

1...Xperia Play:
The Xperia Play is a PHONE...It's a phone that plays GAMES and offer PlayStation Suites.

2...S1 and S2 are tablets. What Sony is offering is an alternative to other Tablets on the market. It' also the ONLY Tablet can plays PlayStation games, or at least the one made by Sony. You'll never find people playing God of Wars or Killzone on the iPad, but you'll see people playing them on the Sony S1 or S2. Also the Design of the S1 are very different from the iPad and the S2 are the first of it's kind on the market for tablet. Yes, the S2 look like a larger DS, but the S2 is a tablet and DS is a portable game console.

The idea of saying that the S1 look like the iPad is stupid beyond belief. Yes a proud American company came up with new idea for a tablet and because it was an American company NO ONE ELSE IS ALLOW to FOLLOW...

So when Apple release The Apple TV or iTV, you'll be the first to Say Why Apple we already have a Sony TV... Or you'll be writing a another article call Bye Bye Sony, Apple is here to eat your lunch?

What I don't understand is why you didn't talk about the Apple products that are completing with each other... Like the iPod,Shuffle, Nano and Touch. There are probably 3-4 different iPods on the market right now that you can buy from Apple. Of course there the iPhone that can also play music, movies.

Naturally, When Sony have more then one products, it's will be the end of the world for the Japs company.

A couple things, the PSN is down because of Sony... Yes, the network was hacked, but the PSN was shortly brought back online. Sony's keeping the network down temporarily, so that they can make sure this issue never pops-up again. Sony can turn the network back on in a heartbeat if they wanted. Also, the term "Anonymous", is a term used to describe members of 4chan. Not all 4chan members are hackers; everyone on 4chan calls themselves "Anonymous". And one other thing, why the fuck do you say "$ony"? They're a fucking business, so obviously making a profit is their ultimate goal. Why "criticize" Sony, by associating their name with the dollar sign? Stupid kids need to grow the fuck up...
