PoV: Is online pass necessary? |
Listed in: PS3 Tags: Codemasters, dirt 3, Electronic Arts, online pass
PS3 gamers who've recently purchased the retail version of Codemasters's latest rally racer DiRT 3 are now stuck in the mud trying to figure out how they can enjoy the multiplayer components of the game.

Â
This is because the online pass which is needed to unlock the multiplayer modes of the game can only be redeemed through the PlayStation Store, which has been down and out since last month.
The PS3 version of Mortal Kombat also encountered similar problems when it was released, but Netherrealm decided to temporarily lift the online pass until Sony brings the Store back online. Unfortunately, this do not apply to the PS3 version of DiRT 3.
"We've looked into doing something similar for Dirt 3 but it's technically not possible, as it's hard-coded into the game," a Codemasters’ representative explained to Eurogamer.
Online passes are now becoming a more stable ingredients for games, as publishers and developers seek to counter-measure the used game market in order to protect their revenue and reward first-hand customers. If you plan to play the multiplayer mode but only own a used copy of the game, you'll usually need to pay an extra US$ 9.99 on the PS3, or 800 Microsoft Points to go online. Personally, I hate the scheme, it just shows you how greedy the publishers and developers nowadays.
How about you guys? Do you think online passes are necessary? Share your thoughts below or continue the discussion at the forums.

And when games are traded in, most people will then go and purchase another game, hence putting MORE money back in to the gaming industry.
Also, pre-owned sales are a big drive in keeping companies in business. Haven't we had enough shops close over the last few years already?
It's just pure corporate greed wanting to push the profit margin higher and higher. They already make more than any of us can spend in a life-time and it's about time they stopped ripping us all off!

And how do pre-owned sales kill the industry? Well, people are buying a game for 3 dollars cheaper if it's used. (Like God of War I saw at GamerStop.) If that wasn't available for resale, then someone would purchase the new version of the game. When the new version is purchased, the total number of purchased copies of the game increases and increases the profits of the publisher. When the resale version is purchased, it is a copy that has already been sold so the total number of new copies being sold does not increase and does not increase the publisher's profits.
There you go. The only people that profit from used games are GameStop and whenever they sell used games, they are taking away from publisher's potential consumer.

800 points is what a DLC-game costs.
Screw multiplayer, I'm going single!
Sure it is fun to play against other people, but like this it ain't.
