PoV: Is online pass necessary?

PS3 gamers who've recently purchased the retail version of Codemasters's latest rally racer DiRT 3 are now stuck in the mud trying to figure out how they can enjoy the multiplayer components of the game.

dirt3-online-pass

This is because the online pass which is needed to unlock the multiplayer modes of the game can only be redeemed through the PlayStation Store, which has been down and out since last month.

The PS3 version of Mortal Kombat also encountered similar problems when it was released, but Netherrealm decided to temporarily lift the online pass until Sony brings the Store back online. Unfortunately, this do not apply to the PS3 version of DiRT 3.

"We've looked into doing something similar for Dirt 3 but it's technically not possible, as it's hard-coded into the game," a Codemasters’ representative explained to Eurogamer.

Online passes are now becoming a more stable ingredients for games, as publishers and developers seek to counter-measure the used game market in order to protect their revenue and reward first-hand customers. If you plan to play the multiplayer mode but only own a used copy of the game, you'll usually need to pay an extra US$ 9.99 on the PS3, or 800 Microsoft Points to go online. Personally, I hate the scheme, it just shows you how greedy the publishers and developers nowadays.

How about you guys? Do you think online passes are necessary? Share your thoughts below or continue the discussion at the forums.

These schemes offer absolutely no benefit to the customer. Lastly, it will hurt your resale price if you sell your game back on ebay etc. When you already pay for online, why should you have to pay for a code that offers no functionality and for something that is already on the disc. this should be illegal. Its false advertising when the game company offers certain modes but makes someone pay extra to unlock it after the initial purchase. What are games becoming? I want the full game no matter where I get it. This just makes your company look bad. I hope these companies rot in hell because I will never them a cent now. I'm looking at you Mortal Kombat and Dirt developers you guys are the worst companies. I hope hackers totally ruin your code schemes and the playstation store so nobody can play your games anymore.

i hate online and never use it, so it's no skin off my ass. What i would love to see is the ability to pay a few bucks to get a new export key (like the one that lets you download all the songs from a Rock Band track pack to the Rock Band main game) for a game i bought used.

i agree with everybody on this one with the dirt 3 if the cars and stuff is already on the disc than the only thing I'll do is just down load the save file with the cars already unlock and call it a day i don't use multilayer anyway so I'm not hurting the game company's need to understand that some people don't need inline game play there's a thing call system link as in connecting two or more ps3 or Xbox 360 together so who need multilayer and people will just find a way to unlock the cars you get with dirt 3 for free anyway so there is no big deal about the online pass. some people buy used like me because they don't have $60 for every new game that comes out maybe make the games at a lower price and than more people will buy used or better yet make the game so good that some people who don't reg buy new will buy new more often than not just saying.

Absolutely retarded, but selling used games is worse for the industry than piracy.

i wouldn't say that. the industry got the money from that one copy already. once they got the money from a copy, ain't no way they will get more from it.(besides these online pass and dlc crap)

I agree that once they get the money, we should be able to sell it or give it away or do whatever, but I'm just saying that it takes away from more potential gain than piracy does. It's a fact.

There is no way that used games are worse than piracy. I mean for a start, devlopers/publishers get NOTHING at all from pirated games.

And when games are traded in, most people will then go and purchase another game, hence putting MORE money back in to the gaming industry.

Also, pre-owned sales are a big drive in keeping companies in business. Haven't we had enough shops close over the last few years already?

It's just pure corporate greed wanting to push the profit margin higher and higher. They already make more than any of us can spend in a life-time and it's about time they stopped ripping us all off!

Actually, pirating games does help the industry. I pirate games if there aren't demos available and if I like the game, then I buy it. I wouldn't make the purchase otherwise. They gain money from it and that is only one small point. If you want to read the rest, check out my research essay.

And how do pre-owned sales kill the industry? Well, people are buying a game for 3 dollars cheaper if it's used. (Like God of War I saw at GamerStop.) If that wasn't available for resale, then someone would purchase the new version of the game. When the new version is purchased, the total number of purchased copies of the game increases and increases the profits of the publisher. When the resale version is purchased, it is a copy that has already been sold so the total number of new copies being sold does not increase and does not increase the publisher's profits.
There you go. The only people that profit from used games are GameStop and whenever they sell used games, they are taking away from publisher's potential consumer.

God damn you!

800 points is what a DLC-game costs.

Screw multiplayer, I'm going single! :-)

Sure it is fun to play against other people, but like this it ain't.

I wouldn't call it greedy for the companies to try and make money off of used games sales. the industry has been in a slump for a while now. BUT, i hate these stupid online passes, because it only causes problems for me when i'm at school playing video games. if i actually bought used games i think i'd care a little more
