When the original PlayStation 3 console launched in 2006, it represented the bold future of gaming hardware. Slightly more advanced than the Xbox 360 and boasting a built-in Blu Ray player, the PS3 floundered for a bit early on due to its high price point, but eventually became a sharp competitor to the Microsoft brand with exclusive titles like Uncharted and Grand Turismo.

But now it’s 2011 – isn’t it about time Sony started talking about the PlayStation 4? Nintendo has already announced its next console in the form of the Wii U, and there can be no doubt that Microsoft and Sony are both hard at work on the hardware that will eventually become their new system – but where are the details?
Analysts have predicted that the PS3 could stay strong until at least 2015, so it stands to reason the Xbox could likely make it that far as well. But the question here is whether gamers will want to play a nine-year-old console in the face of PC innovation. Already, games like Arkham City and Battlefield 3 are absolutely eclipsing their console competitors – Sony and Microsoft need to do something if they want to stay up to speed.
Developers already have to “dumb down” their content for consoles; as the hardware ages this process will be have an increasingly negative impact on the development process. Eventually we’ll hit a point where a virtual chasm exists between PS3s and PCs, if we’re not there already. A new console may not make perfect sense for companies with two decent performers, but it’s in the best interest of the industry that consoles move forward every few years.
So what do you think? Does the PS3 have a few years left in it, or is it time for an update? What features would you like to see in a new PlayStation console?

That, however, is bollocks. they dont HAVE to dumb anything down, they just dont care enough and theres not enough pc gamers to warrent their effort.
The pc is in another league from the ps3/360 much like the wii except the pc is good.
If anything is causing games to be "dumbed down" its the 360. that is a fact olny argued by stubborn and/or childish 360 owners who dont realise they can still buy a ps3 or pc if they want.

I don't see a problem with the current generation unless it's holding back GAMEPLAY. The limited storage space of the 360's DVDs may well be causing that (depending on the game), but the PS3? Hardly.

And "4" in Japan means death so most likely the new home PlayStation console wouldn't be PS4.
Despite Son Goku on Dragon Ball GT turning Super Saiyajin 4.

It'll still be the 4th playstation and as the playstation have been numbered it make sense to call it ps4 or are you saying we should all be able to see the future.

Developers are at a nice sweet spot with the systems' ages and I don't believe that there's a need to update the hardware unless it bridges a big gap or expands something tremendously. Computers update easily and frequently, not systems.

lol what spec pc have you seen running games? most pc games on low settings look like the console versions, even then the gfx are still better.

"Analysts have predicted that the PS3 could stay strong until at least 2015,"
why kill that market when you will continue to be strong with one main console as opposed to introducing a new console and drying up the current market.

My guess is, probably.

i doubt it will be dominant in 2015, but you never know.

Quite honestly I don't think we really need a brand new console...

360 gets 99% of the games made on the 360 then ported 2 ps3.
both systems are so different from 1 another bluray vs old style dvd plyer.graphics cards are different, there console engine are so different from 1 another. question is should or is it time 4 a new xbox console yes it is.
ps3 can last up to 2015 but i think ps3 should do 2more years y it jus will be time.wit that said 2 end all this 360 an ps3 new console an sum 4 the time stop porting all together so we can finally see how much powerful the ps3 is vs the 360.
if they do 1 or 2 thing can happen, but b4 i say what we know or told about the ps3 ''it only uses 45% of its full potential'' ok there's no way it could use its full potential because its getting ported games from a console that uses the old style dvd player. its childs play porting older dvd 2 bluray movies not games its simple an easy its no special key code.
now 4 the 2 console 360 ported games 2 the ps3 everything gets dum down graphics, howmany players online...yall know bf3 would had been more than 12on12 y its because the 360 could handle no more than a curtail amount of players n 1 room. 360 is setting a standard on what should jus because they cant do it so who suffers gamers an it doesn't stop wit online players everything else. from like i said graphics development of games meaning better games, devs making an wanting to make a better product but they cant because they put games on both.
its unfair still that 360 gets addons b4 the ps3 gets them so y not put what the 360 cant do on the ps3. if this was 15years ago or more if that console cant the devs will put it on the othe console.

they can't make the resolution any higher right now, or give it many new features. If there were a new one, it would probably just have a better processor (Among other minor features)
The Xbox360 is a different case, each disc is 9GB. Games are already hitting the 27gb (3 discs on xbox) and on PS3 they're going up to almost 50GB
At least on PS3 they fit on one disc, but having a game split onto 2 or more discs is annoying at times.
When new PS3 games come up they will still fit on one disc, but 50GB = about 5 dvd's for xbox, and the resolution isn't even HD
So the Xbox needs an update soon, and they have to start using Blu-ray
I know this will never happen, but it would be good if you could 'upgrade' the device. It would let you get newer games and improve the device. Would also be cheaper than buying a new console, and would increase it's life-span.
Like maybe take the Xbox into the store, and they can install a blu-ray drive and the software. Then new games could be marked for 'xbox360 PLUS'. Meaning you need to have the hardware update.
Really would be a good idea

They could have made a licencing deal for blu-ray and incorporated a blu-ray drive, but they chose to stick with DVD for games. They knew that the console would be using high detailed textures and what-not yet didn't implement HDMI onboard.
Sometimes waiting pays off. Even though the PS3 was extremely highly priced, it was well worth the wait.

Things aren't how they used to be; where you could let a console live an average 10-year lifespan (PS2, and still selling). Technology has vastly improved (remember 8MB PS2 memory cards?). The gaming industry needs to take a hint from every other tech industry, and release newer and better products at a more rapid rate. Take the iPhone, for example. There's already a "5G" model, after only a few years since the iPhone's initial launch. Hell, even televisions improve rapidly. Remember those "plasma" TVs that existed about the time the PS3 launched? Now it's LED / OLED and/or 3D TVs.
As a console gamer, I can assure everyone that PC gaming will surpass console gaming if developers refuse to upgrade their systems.
