PoV: Future consoles are disc-free

THQ CEO Brian Farrell expects future iteration of consoles to ditch disc drives in favour of cloud gaming, a move which he predicts could benefit not just the developers and publishers, but also the paying consumers.

Speaking at the Cloud Gaming USA conference, as reported by GamesIndustry, Farrell said the transition from physical retail to digital is already underway.

"With the current generation of consoles, the best games come in physical form. But the next range of consoles that will be out in the next five years, why would any of those need physical media? Why would they want physical media?"

"The box, ship and done model is transitioning to observe, measure, and modify," he said. This is "a games as a service model where direct consumer feedback allows the ability to operate in this always on, always connected environment. We have the opportunity to interact with players in new ways that can be reactive to their desires, play habits, and buying habits.”

Farrell noted that they have already well over 40 weeks DLC packs for their upcoming title, Saints Row: The Third, "which will grow and change the experience as the consumer engages with the game… We intend to create an online digital ecosystem with the consumer that keeps them interested for almost a year, perhaps even longer. And we expect most of our large console games going forward will extend the base experience with DLC packs. Things like online in-game storage, and consumables and other online items that will go on for at least a year post-release."

Personally, I think physical retail is still here to stay. Though some of today's industry have already adapted to the digital medium, cloud gaming won't take off if half of the world still lack adequate infrastructure for the technology. Why not give consumers both options, and let them decide. Afterall, I don't believe going digital will lower console and game prices.

What do you think of Farrell's statement folks? IS disc-free console the way to go? Share your thoughts below or continue the discussion at the forums.

I would hate it if it did.

Benefit the paying customers how?
So they can charge us the same price for a game that we don't get the box, instructions etc with...
There is no shipping costs for them also... so why do we still get charged the same for something I would certainly prefer to have a hard copy.

The PSPgo was a prime example of what people want and don't want! It failed... and I predict that if consoles started to implement this Download only games, well they would fail to.

Totally agree with all u said. This is just another
way to tigh customers to the cloud service providers
and charge extra for the service late on. I refuse to buy
A console only to be dependent on Internet.
And to be honest I like the box.
To the guy I say keep dreamin.

even though some thing cloud gameing is better. i tend to disagree. i like to have digital media. something thats physicly on my hard drive or on a blu-re. if i have to suck up bandwith just to enjoy a game moreless have an internet connection on a constant then count me out. on top of that what if i want to sell the game after enjoying it the 1st time or what if i don't like the game at all. then on my account i'm stuck with a game that just sits there. on top of that theres some that require you to pay a subscription fee for useing the service and enjoying the game. like i said before i'd rather have some form of physical media.

they need to reduce game price if they want to do that. game should only cost $10 or 20 not %60

This is just nothing but attempted brain washing, because all these developers are just hoping the more they say digital only gaming is a good thing the more they hoping people believe it, and all i know is if i can't sell my games when i finished playing them it's just like burning a third of the money i pay for games now.

you would need the CD/DVD/BluRay market to disappear too, because people actually use their consoles for things other than gaming.

yes, i know all three of those are fading, but they are still vital enough that they are continuing to be made for those who don't want just a digital version.

you will need Netflix (or some other service) to have just about every movie ever made for this to be effective.

no trade in for cash hell no, cant give cloud games away or sell hell no. u have to be online hell no, internet gets laggy an net providers go down then what all sounds stupid. i like haven my collection of games period, cloud is jus ok for curtain games an good for handleheld games.

benefit lol it benefits u just like 99$ chips, what like 5years ago or so they start putting less chips n bags more air than chips now they r hiking the price up $1.30 an still less chips. its so much than can go wrong with cloud only games. file of game corrupted an or virus from cloud. jus 2much hackers could an will destroy consoles that r jus could

I am part of OnLive service. The response time with a mouse and keyboard is blah and on top of that games stay at a steady 30fps I know people can only see up to this (supposedly) but I like to run games at 60fps because it is a lot more smother and I can notice it big time. Cloud gaming is horrible with mouse+keyboard support but great with a controller.

I don't like the idea of having not to own a hard copy of the game and having to rely on internet connection to play my game I purchased.

Its gonna suck having to wait for my internet to come back online when it goes down while playing Diablo III when its released. =_= so cloud gaming in my opinion is not the way of gaming future. In my opinion.

cloud gaming is a joke, I have a 30mb line and still get lag, I don't know about you but moving the mouse on a FPS game and taking 1-2 secs to move makes me want to just jump over to the servers and kill someone.

Disc-less i can see BUT!!! still have Hard media like flash media or something like that, Here soon i can see flash media taking over DVDs/Blu-ray and you can store anything on them + NO SCRATCHING!! And with flash media to soon be able to make 2tb drives what more do you need...well till about another 20-30years. Still waiting on bill gates to say 1Tb is all anyone would ever need HAHAHAHA

If your like me and have a large digital multimedia collection of movies and games, 1 terabyte hard drives are relatively small these days with hd movies taking up to 30 gigabytes for 1 movie.

1 Terabyte drives will be really tiny if this bad idea of going all digital (disc less) gaming wise for buying games succeeds as well. Hd video games all so take up large amounts of pc hard drive space.

Yeah lets go all digital! Lets do it right now! Pssssh yeah right, what so game companies can have a monopoly on games. When games are physical their value goes down after awhile, but think about an all digital marketplace, prices on AAA games would probably never go past 25 bucks. Then again the only benefit i see about cloud gaming is that the games you buy can be constantly changed due to the game being on their servers. Other than that, cloud gaming can go to hell.

If they were to go download only, it would be the last time I bought a system. I don't pay REAL money to play digital games. I may buy a downloaded game for $5 dollars here and there but will never shell out $60 for something I don't physically own.

I get most of the games new very cheap online, after waiting a few months. So I have, or had in total a library of more than 50 games for the PS3. I bought on the PSN maybe 5 games. On both sides some were good some were bad, the bad ones didn't stick very long and I made a profit, the PSN ones are still there.

We have limited hdd space, and I like to play at a time maybe ten different games, everything installed on the hdd?

They can paint it as they want, but if they don't sell digital copies MUCH cheaper it's just not gonna happen. Even if they do, they might only have a chance to have 50% of the big games market.

My favourite games in recent years are Red Dead Redemption, Assassin's Creed II and Pokémon White. The market for cloud gaming might look hot right now, but good old fashioned solid, standalone unnetworked (in the sense that they can function without) are not going anywhere.

I still prefer to buy the disk with packaging when shopping online, digital distribution only is a terrible idea for 10 gigabyte and up in size games.

not talking about digital distribution. this article is about cloud gaming, as in streaming the game.

Read the headline of the news article that is what is being discussed here. Future game consoles going disc free! This means buying all your games online only, eliminating the choice of going to your local game store and buying a physical copy of the game.

Its all alright to say that future consoles are disc free, but even say in 6 years time when (possibly?) the next gen PS might be released. Most of the UK's population just haven't got the speeds needed on their internet connection. I don't exactly live out in the sticks, only 5mins from the M2, but the connection here is appalling, an average of 0.7Mbs! The infrastructure needed just hasn't been invested in.

Cloud gaming will fail big time. Until 99% of all gamers have a ping of 20 or lower, just plain forget about the whole thing. Streaming games will cause more lag in multiplayer. It's laggy enough for a lot of gamers already and i imagine it still will be in 5 years.
Physical copy or no copy at all.
