PoV: Dynasty Warriors Gundam 3 review |

Dynasty Warriors is one of Koei's longest running franchises and is a fan favorite among many gamers despite the relatively low critical acclaim the games are met with. Koei has teamed up with Namco Bandai once again to release the third Gundam based Warriors game, Dynasty Warriors Gundam 3. Does the latest hack 'n slash offer more with the unqiue Gundam universe, or is it just another Dynasty Warriors game?
Namco and Koei opted for a gorgeous cel-shaded visual style with Gundam 3, which makes perfect sense considering the game is based off of an anime series and model line. It feels more like you're controlling one of the models rather than a super realistic mech, but the diversity of the world and variety of mobile suits make up for that. The game runs at a perfectly smooth frame rate, even when there are hundreds of enemies on screen.
And trust me, there isn't a moment where enemies don't crowd the screen.
The Warriors series has always been about hacking and slashing one's way through a battle, and it's no different for Gundam 3. The only difference between this game and previous games from the main Warriors series is that players take control of a Gundam instead of a Japanese samurai.
As such, the combat in the game is mostly melee based. Players will be using a Gundam's beam saber most of the time, with projectile attacks being a secondary option. Past Warriors games use a musou guage, something that has been cleverly added in Gundam 3. Different mobile suits will have their own special abilities when the musou guage fills up (by destroying loads of enemies), and it makes perfect sense for the particular Gundam. For example, when taking control of a Gundam from the Gundam 00 series, the musou guage will activate the Trans-AM feature for a short period of time -- just like in the anime series.
There are 70 different mobile suits to take control of, ranging from Gundam 00's Exia to Gundam Wing's Wing Zero. The only disappointing factor about the different mobile suits is the way players come across them in the game's story mode. Instead of re-creating the different anime series', Namco and Koei decided to combine the different characters into one unique story. This means that pilots from completely different series will meet each other. Maybe it's just the complaint of a huge Gundam fan like myself, but I would much rather have had the different anime re-created in this game.
At its core, Gundam 3 is a Dynasty Warriors game, and that alone will steer way some people. Still, it's a lot more fresh than the generic Japan setting, especially if you're a Gundam fan.

Though, it is sad to see weak projectile attacks from Gundams which sole purpose is to pew pew.
