PoV: Do movie adaptations give added value to video games?

Everyone's just jumping on that chance to board that golden train to Hollywood, from wannabe pop idols, wannabe dancers, wannabe chefs, to video game characters. Yep, video games, much like comic books, have also now been bitten by the adaptation bug. Apart from having it portrayed on the big screen, however, does it really hold significant value to the gaming experience?

We've seen a lot of movie adaptations of video games, and unfortunately, not a few of them were total misses. Need I mention Van Damme's Street Fighter movie? How about Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's Doom - which, in hindsight, was a perfect title for how the movie turned out to be. But there's no need to get into the irony of it all here.

Oh, and of course, there's the infamous Uwe Boll, whom VideoHound's Golden Movie Retriever fondly called their "cinematic train wreck". For every movie adaptation announcement that came out with Boll's name attached to it, gamers all over the world shudder collectively, cringing at the mere thought that yet another title will be butchered by the expert hands of butcher Boll.

They're not all bad adaptations, though. Resident Evil did a fairly good job keeping the interest of the audience, never mind that it's already on its fourth movie installment, and there's still no end in sight to Alice's struggle against the Umbrella Corporation. Then again, the video game franchise itself shows no signs of giving it a rest, so there you go.

Silent Hill was also pretty successful, at least in my opinion, in transporting the heebie jeebies from consoles to cinemas. Angelina Jolie's Tomb Raider too, of course. (Notice how practically all video game films with female leads hit it big on the big screen?) Max Payne -- oh wait. That was Mark Wahlberg. Oh wait. He'll be playing Nathan Drake in the Uncharted movie.

... (angel dies in heaven)

So. Why are the game companies letting their games be butchered by Hollywood again? Surely, it's not only to expand their market value, right? I mean, they must have some strong sense of integrity in keeping true and faithful to the essence of the titles that raked in dough for them, right? Do movie adaptations really up the value of video game titles, or is it just another way of making bread for these companies?

They sure are entertaining. That's what video games and movies are for, anyway. I guess my only prayer is that the adaptations take in the same concern and regard that the developers gave to the game's story. It will, after all, also be the same people who played these games who will be lining up at the cinemas as well.

Maybe Rockstar's prudence in entering this whole new arena of turning their games into movies will be good for them. They want to make sure their games get made into film according to their standards, and the only way for them to guarantee that is by controlling the movie production themselves. Which is to say they will do it by themselves. Rockstar style.

Not every game company can definitely afford that kind of expense, but it sure would be great to see what these guys can come up with.

I think people need to disconnect themselves from the video game when watching the movie. The same goes for the book versus the movie.

I've enjoyed almost all video game movies. Even though I can take a step back and realize how horrible the script was for the last RE.

Game adaptations of movies work because just look at Star Trek, Star Wars etc. They help expand the universe of those games a way just using tv can't do as well. But i've never seen a game based movie that adds anything to the game, really it just is what it is, just a movie like any other except some people played the game and might like or dislike the adaptation, just like when you read a book first and that gives you a more critical view of the movie.

Tekken? Horrible, well I guess If I never played Tekken I might say it's average, but already knowing what tekken is before watching the movie I already can say it's horrible.

But the point in making a movie adaptation is so that we can see the game in movie form, so of course people will expect the movie to follow as close as possible the storyline in the game. Just like books/novel getting adapted to movie, we expect them to be as close as possible to the original content. Changing the original storyline too much destroys the book/novel/game therefore destroying the movie adaptation too :P

I don't think video game based movies add any value to the games. Most game based movie storylines are different from the game storyline. So while you can recognize the references, movies usually don't feel dependent or integrated to the video games they are based on. Gamers usually don't watch a game based movie if the quality is horrible not that good. But gamers and non gamers alike will watch a good video game based movie and not necessarily buy the game the movie is based on. I know some non gamer people that still don't know that RE is based on a game Ripley's Believe it or not!.

On the other hand movie based video games are the polar opposite. These games are usually designed to follow the movie so faithfully that most of the time these are garbage quality is lost. Movie fans will sometimes buy those games just because of the tie to the movie. So in this case movie based video games may add some value to the movie.
