PoV: Can we still expect an SRPG from Yasumi Matsuno?

Yasumi Matsuno is probably best known for his work on Final Fantasy Tactics and Vagrant Story. He's the man usually credited for shining a bright spotlight on tacical RPGs. His recent employment at Japanese developer Level-5, however, has made fans of his work fearful that we won't be getting more of the Matsuno-helmed games we've come to know and love.

When he announced that he was joining Level-5, Matsuno mentioned that he doesn't intend to work "on anything too epic in scale for now". That's a pretty big blow for fans of his epic Ogre Battle series. Matsuno has since clarified, however, that although he may be working on smaller scaled projects, his personal style and approach to making games won't change.

"My purpose means from 'a child to an adult' not 'for the child'," he replied to a fan who complained on Facebook about Level-5 not making any mature-themed games. "And I think that my style does not change. 'An attempt is sometimes easier than expected.' Please wait for the announcement of my project."

The tactical SRPGs that Matsuno has been renowned for are mostly absent from Level-5's releases, but his addition may still change all that. Having full creative control over his projects also gives him a lot of leeway towards making whatever it is he wants. I guess all that's left for us is to pray that it has something to do with the old Matsuno-developed properties that never got a clear ending. It's been way too long since us old Matusno fans got something like that, though, and I fear that won't change anytime soon.
