PoV: Can EA's new strategy finally dethrone Call of Duty this year? |
Listed in: PS3 Tags: Activision, battlefield 3, DICE, EA
Don't be surprised to see some more Battlefield 3 TV ads in the comings weeks.

It looks like EA has finally found the right formula to go toe-to-toe with the next Call of Duty title, invest more on Battlefield 3's marketing campaign.
"With Battlefield 3, we believe that we have superior technology and gameplay," says Lincoln Hirshberger, Senior Director of Marketing on Battlefield 3. "The gaming press validated this at GDC with a slew of accolades. We just need for everyone else in the mainstream to know that too. Last year, Battlefield Bad Company 2 earned better scores than the competition but, because Battlefield released in March, a lot of the mainstream Holiday hit buyers just weren’t aware that Battlefield was the better game. This year, we’re playing offense by launching Battlefield 3 in the holiday and we’re starting to get the word out early by kicking off our campaign to the mass market. We decided to go big early in order to establish a beachhead with a larger audience and so far the results have been fantastic."
Earlier this year, EA CEO John Riccitiello claimed that EA and Activision would be spending a combined total of around US$ 200 million on marketing their respective shooters later this year.
With a right marketing push, combined with its "superior" game engine, bigger maps and a whole new FPS offering, there's no doubt Battlefield 3 could give the next Call of Duty title a run for its money this year.
How about you guys? What do you think about EA's new strategy? Do you think they have a shot to dethroned Call of Duty this year? Share your thoughts below or continue the discussion at the forum.

I already thought battlefield was the better franchise and COD itself is not a bad game but the amount of praise and loyalty it gets makes it seem like its something as groundbreaking as Ocarina or maybe some of the early FPSs like DOOM which if some people weren't so blind would be clear as day.
Man but I don't know, This generation has seen a lot of "one of these games is not like the other" feeling in graphics but also in game play lacking anything actually new but rather just an upgrade in graphics and some fancy physics. If Battlefield can mix up the FPSs formula and add significant new ideas then it can and will beat COD.
