In an interview published today by Edge, Swedish developer DICE has said that they feel “most sandbox games are boring”

The creators of the Battlefield franchise revealed that the campaigns of their upcoming project, Battlefield 3, will focus more on linear approach like those of Call Of Duty series, rather than the open world style gameplay that they regularly implement.

“I don’t see it as an absolute goal for all games to be sandbox games," said Executive producer Patrick Bach. "We’ve been building sandbox games for quite some time and we’ve got pretty good at it, but I don’t see that as the only way of building games, because then we wouldn’t build campaigns at all.

“In some cases they aren’t, but in most cases sandbox games are hardcore, boring, hard to get into and they are not very popular.”

While this shift might not go well with some gamers, I think the new direction of the series is a breath of fresh air. But only time well tell if it will be successful. Now on his sandbox style comments, I think most open world games tend to be boring because the developers often create a huge open environment but with repetitive missions and poor storyline.

How about you guys? Do you think most sandbox style games are boring? Drop us a comment below or continue the discussion on the forum.

Done right? No. Red Dead was easily the best game released last year.

"Abreath of fresh air"? More like fishy used to death air. I already have enough linear campaign games to make you sick, why would I want one more? Personally I love sandbox games like Fallout, Final Fantasy, Red Dead, and others.

Its sad because i moved to pc because i was tired of all the halo/COD/multiplayer/no/minimal sp bullshit on consoles and now what, battlefiel d,one of my favorite pc games is going the COD route.

Im so fucking close to just saying screw it all.Its nothing like what it used to be.I shouldnt even be considering it,yet,i am.

sand box games that would fall under the "action" category get very boring very quick, Gta4 is only fun past the first few missions then the cheats add a little more playability but not much and 'Red Dead redemption' held my interest up to the point where you go to Mexico then everything became very tedious and boring. personally I do not enjoy them. but on the other end of the spectrum games that are too linear do not hold my interest either games such as, Final Fantasy 13. I had to force myself to beat that game.

Saying a game is going in the direction of CoD and it being a breath of fresh air seems contradicting...

RDR = Best 2010 Video Game

Sandbox games can be boring, but if done right, by R* they're not.

You can say CoD's boring because same missions every time.

I think open sandbox games have more replay value.

Or you could do what I call "Doing what I'm told to do" (such as: kill this guy, now kill that guy)(you win, now want to do that again?)

GTAIV & Fallout 3 got boring as Hell very quickly, but i guess that shows the benefits of DLC because you start off with a Sandbox and grow yourself a beach.

they arent borign if they reward the player with thigns you couldn't get following the linear patter, adn i eman with extra weapons or new paths, endings alternate or not...etcetc. Not cool when the only thing you get is a badge, a trophy, a card, and nothing changes..

I agree that a lot of sandbox games have repetitive missions. Most games just have like 5 or 6 types of missions you can do as side and main missions with the exception of super cinematic-style, action-oriented story scenes (the only missions that give you access to unique weapons/locations, etc). Though these sandbox games have varied settings and huge world maps, the missions just really end up having the same gameplay in different locations with different textures and lighting effects; maybe some higher ground and/or snow (or maybe you'll play 'rail-shooter' on a boat/in a car...). I think that if the focus were on creating a greater variety of types of missions rather than making bigger and bigger game worlds then newer sandbox games could be a lot more fun. It's like, I'd like to play a shooter online with 40 unique standard maps and 3 different good modes to play on those maps, but I would rather play a shooter with 8 unique maps and 20 different great modes to play on those maps.

Maybe it's just me, but I think I prefer real variety over quantity creating the illusion of variety.

TLDR?
More mission/gameplay variety > larger number of repetitive/similar missions.

Quality > Quantity
