In an interview published today by Edge, Swedish developer DICE has said that they feel “most sandbox games are boring”

The creators of the Battlefield franchise revealed that the campaigns of their upcoming project, Battlefield 3, will focus more on linear approach like those of Call Of Duty series, rather than the open world style gameplay that they regularly implement.
“I don’t see it as an absolute goal for all games to be sandbox games," said Executive producer Patrick Bach. "We’ve been building sandbox games for quite some time and we’ve got pretty good at it, but I don’t see that as the only way of building games, because then we wouldn’t build campaigns at all.
“In some cases they aren’t, but in most cases sandbox games are hardcore, boring, hard to get into and they are not very popular.”
While this shift might not go well with some gamers, I think the new direction of the series is a breath of fresh air. But only time well tell if it will be successful. Now on his sandbox style comments, I think most open world games tend to be boring because the developers often create a huge open environment but with repetitive missions and poor storyline.
How about you guys? Do you think most sandbox style games are boring? Drop us a comment below or continue the discussion on the forum.

Sandbox games can be boring, but if done right, by R* they're not.
You can say CoD's boring because same missions every time.

Or you could do what I call "Doing what I'm told to do" (such as: kill this guy, now kill that guy)(you win, now want to do that again?)

Maybe it's just me, but I think I prefer real variety over quantity creating the illusion of variety.
TLDR?
More mission/gameplay variety > larger number of repetitive/similar missions.
Quality > Quantity
