PoV: Are PS3 and Xbox 360 nearing their technical peaks?

Both Microsoft and Sony have said separately that their home video game consoles would each have a life-cycle of at least ten years. We're only a little past the halfway mark but developer and publisher Codemasters believes that we are fast approaching the consoles' technical ceilings.

When asked by gaming news blog CVG whether the current console generation is nearing their technical peak, Bodycount director Andy Wilson said, "I think [that's] probably fair, yeah." Another Codemasters man, F1 2011's designer Stephen Hood, also pointed out that F1 2011's hardware demands put quite a strain on current gen consoles.

This comes at a time when both Sony and Microsoft have been recently rumored to be prepping the successors of the PS3 and Xbox 360, respectively. Nintendo, on the other hand, has already taken the plunge with the announcement of the Wii U at E3 2011.

With the speed new technologies are becoming available to the mass market, I guess it's not that farfetched to believe that the PS3 and Xbox 360 are already reaching their peak performance level after a mere five or six years. After all, the same thing happened with the PS2 and God of War.

The most important thing to note here, however, is that Codemasters thinks the consoles are just nearing their peak, meaning they're not there yet. Said Wilson, the current console cycle has been "unusually long" and he doesn't see it ending "for some time yet."

I agree, and I think that can only be a good thing. When I look at the current crop of major console exclusives with their insanely beautiful graphics, I feel assured that the next ones will just get better. As long as the devs don't rest on their laurels, of course.

The 360 has already reached its peak and has actually surpased it. Halo Reach pushed the 360 to far, just look at the dumbed down graphics in splitscreen, the limiting of certain playlists to only one or two players per conbsole because the console cant handle them with more, the fact that if you build anything in forge of any value or even simple stuff the map lags with more than one person on the same console, fps drops in campaign etc.

I think they can get alot more out of both systems. Just think of how Rage looks like now imagine the second generation of that engine. Its gonna be sick!!

They just about hanging on now but technology's moving so fast that 3 years from now people will be looking at their 3ghz 6 core Smartphones and thinking this Ps3 thing is looking ancient, and they expecting us to wait another 2 years while the games industry is being artificially slowed down because technologies so old? I'm still happy with these consoles but 10 years is just too much these days.

it may be close an or the end of both ps3 an 360 cycle,but really how far advanced will the W-U b. as i thought about it W-U just caught up to the nex gen, yea it could be alil better but howmuch?

with the 360 it has a big library of games an to boot alot of great gimmick's an features.
with the ps3 has the greatest console hardware an it has yet to really explore an tap in to what it can really do.

with that said what does the W-U really have 2 offer great colorful graphics,will it grab all features an gimmick's from both ps3 an 360?

lastly will W-U still be ontop after the ps3 an 360 comes out with there new console or will it drop to 3 or further because we really cant count out the pc gamers. plus i have a strong feelin devs r goin to make games better on the W-U just 2 push ps3 an 360 to come out faster. devs i think all that W-U WOW is just boosting up yall new money endeavors up b4 it get cut short ill give W-U 3years b4 the great fall again nintendo ay be in the superbowl but they r just anothe ''BUFFALO BILLS''

I'm not really bothered about the graphics, what matters is the games quality.

There are plenty of great games with great graphics, but devs need to invest in making some real quality games!

With the latest slim and shiny xbox 360 250GB version, the AMD processors are actually limited in terms of their clock speed...Microsoft have said this was not an indication that they would put out a firmware code to unlock it at a later date, as one journalist had asked....but it makes you wonder!!
Hopefully Microsoft were just lying to throw off Sony or something....but I for one hope they do unlock it's true potential!

They were off there Peak 3 years ago when ATi came out with the R7xx GPU which is now in the WiiU.

All that matters to me is most Ps3 & 360 games just aren't fun anymore but Wii games are, even if it is only for 10 minutes, so if that extra power can stretch that fun factor out them i'm very happy, and even if it is just more Shovelware i really couldn't give a crap because when i switch my console on i expect to be entertained, and i have to pay something like Fallout 3 is dull as Hell for 80% of the time and you have to really work for any entertainment value.

The PS3 and 360 are seeing some great graphics and AI that push their hardware. But, the 360 is really showing its age right now... Halo Reach really was the best in graphics for the system with everything else like load times taken into account.
However, the PS3's library is getting better and better. While the end of the road may be near for both, I see it being a long time before the PS3 stops selling. As soon as the 360 came out, it seems, Microsoft was not concerned with releasing Xbox games or making more Xbox consoles unless they were for the 360.... I think when they come out with the 720, they will drop the 360 games/consoles and just continue with the new console. I believe the PS3 will continue like the PS2 has.
