Photo-Realistic Games to be the standard Within Ten Years?
Last week, I published an editorial about how Christoph Hartmann from 2K games believes that games must be photo-realistic in order to compete with the emotional appeal of movies. Today, a similar statement was made by Industrial Light and Magic's Kim Liberi. This brings up even more controversy when I think about the future of gaming.

According to the company's visual effects supervisor, he believes that not only will photo-realism become a part of gaming, but more importantly, that that specific change is going to happen within the next ten years. Essentially he states that at the rate we are progressing, it only seems natural that seven to ten years from now you will begin to see games that are "indistinguishable from reality."
He goes on to explain that until we reach that quota of realism, it will be very hard for us to try out new genres of gaming, and that is why we see so many shooters available on modern consoles. Now that I have mulled this over in my head for about a week, I have a few more thoughts. I have to say, while I was not completely for it at first, I am slowly beginning to change my mind, especially after these new comments. In my past article I mentioned LA Noire as a game that adequately used photo-realism to its advantage, and I have since realized that that game worked so well because it breaks new ground just like Kim suggests, If photo-realism is going to give us those kinds of experiences more often, I suppose I'm all for it. I just hope it's not abused without us getting anything new out of it. As usual, what are your thoughts?
