2K Games Boss Calls for Photo-Realism in Games |

Hartmann says that films have a certain dominance over games right now because they are able to convey a sense of emotion that typically pixilated models simply can’t match. If I am to take an editorial opinion on this, as a member of QJ I personally somewhat disagree. Yes the lack of a new console generation has left the industry struggling for new avenues to explore, but I don’t think that this way of doing things is necessarily it. If games become too real, in a sense they no longer become games. Not to mention there are plenty of other mechanisms that a developer can use to engender emotions as well, such as music, lighting, and the portion of facial movement that they can capture today. In my opinion the game industry just needs to capitalize on the areas it can work with instead of talking about its shortcomings.

That’s not to say the experiments we have seen so far with photo-realism in games have not been awesome. LA Noire was one of my favorite games of the last few years, and it was in large part due to their facial scanning technology. The best thing to do in my opinion is strike a balance between graphical representation and faux realism. That way, games can be games, and we can see some emotion. What do you think about this?
