PoV: Should the PS Vita give in to price drop pressure?

For some reason, just because the Nintendo 3DS dropped their prices, analysts and other "experts" are chiming in that Sony should follow suit and slash off some significant bucks off of the PlayStation Vita's tag -- this, despite the fact that the handheld isn't even out yet.

Some of the so-called concerns of the analysts is that the PlayStation Vita isn't guaranteed to be flying off the shelves once it hits the market. Despite the hype for it, it's still a very pricey little thing to buy. The PlayStation Vita, set to come out later this year, is pegged at US$ 249 and US$ 299 (3G). Sony, in the meantime, is staying firm on their stand, saying that they know that the PS Vita will be worth every penny.

Now, frankly, I think that while Sony should consider what the analysts are saying, they should, in the end, decide based on their own projections of how successful their product could be in the end. It's obviously going to be a double-edged sword for them, anyway, a damned-if-you-do-damned-if-you-don't kind of scenario, if you will.

If Sony maintains their hardheadedness over the price, then they obviously run the risk of turning off potential day one consumers, no matter the big, favorable words that industry giants are saying about it. Apart from that, it's going to reflect on Sony as being inconsiderate and insensitive, especially considering that the US is experiencing some economic hiccups right now.

On the other hand, if Sony does concede to this demand of price drop, then they are basically confessing their uncertainty and distrust for their own product. They tagged the original price at that point precisely because they deemed it's going to be worth every buck. I know, they also said the same thing about the PlayStation 3, and we all saw how slow the take-off was for the console. Still, I think it's a matter of taking a firm stand on what the company believes in.

If they truly are confident that people will buy the Vita despite the price because of its guaranteed quality, then they should rest easy and not worry about it. After all, they designed the Vita specifically for the gaming market who actually has the money to spare. Then again, on the other end of that spectrum, how many of us really do have the money to spare for a gadget that's looking all the more frivolous in times like this?

When Sony announced the price of the PSV, everyone was amazed it was so low. I don't think they should go any lower for the launch. Maybe in 6-12 months time there may be a drop, but for launch, I think they have the price right where it should be.

Apart from the lack of 3D, it's miles more powerful than the 3DS so Sony are correct to keep it priced where it is.

Agree, considering what monster the Vita is this is actually very cheap i think! I was expecting it to cost around 4-500 but at 300 its a bargain.

"Apart from the lack of 3D"

Until we get some kind of confirmation, we can assume that it supports some sort of glasses based 3D.

It needs a special screen to be 3D with glasses. I don't think they're willing to invest that much money. But I definitely believe they'd be willing to allow viewing of 3D formatted stuff like 3D movies and 3D images in 2D.

PSP doesn't have a special screen and it can use colored glasses.
Assuming the Vita's screen maxes at 60FPS, we can use LC Shutter glasses and play games at 30fps. If it maxes at 120, we might se 30-60FPS games. I doubt the system could handle 120FPS unless the game was designed for it.

the price is already good enough a price drop would make it more attractive for sure but not necessary. I am getting 1 for sure

I think the price in the US is very fair indeed. Converted to GBP it is only £20 more than the new 3DS price.

But in the UK, the price of the Vita was set as £229 which is $371.99 (inc tax) which is a bit ridiculous considering it only costs $250 for americans which is an amazing price but $371 would obviously be a bit steep or most people to pay.

I do think they should reconsiser their UK pricing and other overseas prices like Europe. Something like £200 would be the sweet spot for me really but currently they have adopted the apple pricing strategy. Change the currency symbol and slash a a couple tens off which just doesn't match up very well and doesn't seem fair.

"Converted to GBP it is only £20 more than the new 3DS price."

Silly Brit. Nobody in this industry "converts" to anything. They just use the same number and charge you 100 or 200 USD worth more.

I might have my info wrong, but aren't you guys charged more because of the healthcare, and free nannies when a kid is born . . . idk but over in usa everyone hates the healthcare system, and the only way to do it is to raise the tax . . . i don't know maybe my info is right or it's super wrong

Lol. I bet the Vita is priced at a loss already. Lowering the price more would be a bigger loss. Though I would LOVE that, it's not necessary. :-)

analyst that say that should all be fired, cuz psp wasa released at $299.99 aand didnt do bad, 3ds only did horrible for 2 reasons. a nintendo handheld shouldnt me so much cuz there isnt that much tech in it to justify and really the only game to talk about on the system is zelda and really its a remake so its not so much a big deal, sony at the other hand is known for expesive prices and it ends up better way better price then expeted, everyone was dancing, now cuz a 3ds drops price its not a good price either? sony has 2 thinngs to do better at launch then nintendo. THE REPUTATION AND A WAY BETTER LINE UP FROM WHAT I KNOW and they got a stack of good games coming

These are the same "experts" that expected the price to be upwards of a new home console and then praised Sony when they announced $250. There is no expertise involved here.

Wouldn't it be some seriously sneaky shit if Nintendo planed the price drop from the begining with the main intent to shake everyones confindence in their purchase?

Just think how many people will now wait to buy the Vita to see if the price will drop.

Well played Nintendo, well played.

okay ima be honest im cheap, i waited 1 year maybe more before getting the psp, and true i would love getting the vita for cheaper who would complain? C'mon though this is a VERY GOOD price for the vita, and why should they drop the price? The vita is much more powerful than the 3ds, looks slicker, has about the same if not more features than the 3ds, it hasnt been released yet, and the graphics are breath taking for a handheald console. Sony went all out on this why should they lower it any more? The only time i feel they should even do a price drop is if they end up having a HORRIBLE game library for it, but they would have to do worse than the psp/pspgo. Sony keep the price

P.S. Please excuse all my bad grammar still summer and i dont really pay attention to it

The DS isn't only "kids" games.
SMT: Devil Survivor
Castlevania: DoS; PoR; OoE
Ninja Gaiden: DS
Hotel Dusk: Room 215

Those are all great DS "non kids" games, just to name a few.

stupid prick

if you read what xnamkcor said "Silly Brit. Nobody in this industry "converts" to anything. They just use the same number and charge you 100 or 200 USD worth more."

That means it will cost $250 USD, $250CND, £250.

Even though £250 is $406.35USD, you guys still got to pay the extra $156.35USD just 'cause.

SONY should not lower the price, they will be losing to much money then probably rape us on some other product, games or feature!! But maybe some incentive like a free PSN download with every purchase of a PSV will bring more consumers in to buy one!! 8) 8)

Professionally speaking the people who buy dedicated handheld electronics are the same people who complain about prices on a constant basis so, Maybe?

It is a very tantalizing piece of hardware Sony will be offering however I do have to agree with other Analyst's on this one (but on the same hand disagree). The PS Vita is definitely going to be worth whatever price is set for it, just don't make the same mistake as Nintendo and not have a plethora of entertainment for me to wield (First or Third party as well as promised features). If you can't do that than you as a company shouldn't really expect the consumer to find value in your products.

I don't think Sony's feeling the pressure from the 3DS, the 3DS' graphics are slightly better than the PSP's after all.
Not to mention the PSV's line-up seems to be better than the 3DS, which is partly why they dropped the 3DS' price.
Not even the Ambassador Program will save the 3DS from the PSV.

I said it once and I'll say it again:If U want to be cheaper U don't want Vita but some other handheld
Whoever thinks Vita is a Next Gen portable console(I would say unlike the 3ds -no offense)must think that it has its price-its as affordable as possible.Buy PSP or 3ds they are not bad consoles but if U want next gen U'll bare with the price
I can not understand why do you write this thing again...

I think this competition between 3ds and Vita price-war. Helps/benefits the consumer greatly because if there were no 3ds the Vita probably would not have even priced the handheld at 250 to begin with it would have probably been as high as 350WiFi and 400WiFi3g model. so hey if sony feels the need to lose more money on the unit but almost guarantee vita selling out for a while at a newer price point then by all means let them do it because i'm pretty sure it will sell steadily at 250 but it will sell like hotcakes at a lower price

# best way eversuggestion 2011-08-10 23:34

I suggest that SONY do 1 of 2 things:

1..Release the VITA with the incentive to include either Resistance or Uncharted FREE in the Package for $249/$299 (3G)

OR

2.. Release the VITA for $199$249/(3G) Stand-alone.

Releasing the VITA at its original price as a Stand-alone unit in light of the 3DS's price cut is NOT viable anymore!!!!!

And besides....if they want a ton DAY-1 sales under their belt SONY had better do 1 of the 2 above suggestions cause only the Hardcore followers MIGHT buy Day-1 for sure and I don't think that will be enough in fact.

As much as anyone would love a price drop for psvita I dont think its needed or fair.Nintendo had to drop the 3ds price because it wasnt selling well but it was mainly because of lack of content. Psvita has way more to offer as a system itself aside from the games.Nintendo should have waited to release the 3ds when their launch titles included O.O.T,Mario Kart,Mario, Star fox etc. They are also not giving us 3d classics that we would actually want but all said aside When nintendo delivers they do deliver.

# What would Sony gains?D4fox 2011-08-11 13:38
If Nintendo can cut the price by what 70 or 80 dollars in less than a year, it means that it wasnt worth the 250 to begin with. Nintendo is suffering right now for bad planning. They thought everybody from the DS will jump blindly on the 3DS. I dont think sony need to lower the price. And like they said just because a company in the business lower theirs doesnt mean they have to. From what Im seeing from the vita posts, it is well supported right now and for the first time sony actually know what is doing. Free Dev kit to indie devs, which means we might have something close to the app store with low budget games. The only downfall would be if they make the same mistake they did with minis. The game is $.99 on app store and 3.99-4.99 on PSN. If we can get games at the 0.99c price range, you can bet you behind that the vita will be here for a long long time.
