PoV: Download-only console not yet ripe |

Said Shuhei Yoshida, Sony Worldwide Studios boss, "We believe, for some consumers, the time is [right], but for other consumers, the time is still not [right]. So we believe the time is still not right to go download-only as a platform."

What could be the deciding factor as to why they are siding with those consumers who not ready for a download-only approach in gaming? It's simple: broadband internet. "Some PS Vita titles, like Uncharted: Golden Abyss, will be close to 4GB in size, which could be too large to download for consumers who do not have a fast broadband connection."
But apart from this, "Some consumers like shopping in retail stores, talking to knowledgeable store clerks, buying and playing games on the spot. We do not want to remove that capability from consumers."
SCEE's Jim Ryan concurs, saying that, "There are consumers in parts of the world - this is a global device - where the digital model has not yet fully been embraced." And it's true, really. In fact, in a study recently published, not even the US or UK are in the forerunners of downloading speed. And mind you, everyone gets just a tad bit -- okay, that's not true, a whole LOT -- more impatient when it comes to downloading their stuff on the Internet. What more if it's a game that you've been waiting for eons to come?
Nobody would want to sit around several hours just waiting for the download to finish, on top of the full year (at a minimum) that you've already spent just waiting in anticipation for the game to hit retail.
I would have to agree with Sony on this one. The global infrastructure for a hi-speed connection just isn't all that well set yet. Of course, as a business, they'll have to take into top consideration as well what their other consumers' capacity for enjoying their products are going to be.
The failure of the PSP Go most definitely made this impact on them. Releasing the system without the UMD was a misstep on their part, which they immediately realized when it went dead cold on store shelves just months after its launch. And then they atoned for it by coming up with the PlayStation Vita.
Not to say that a download-only console will be nay possible in the future, but as for now, am fine with my physical media as it is. There's someting fairly comforting having it in the palm of my hands.

As long as ISPs keep throttling & capping, I don't think we'll ever be ready for download-only.

i live in the uk and i have a rubbish capped 8mb broadband that runs more as a 4mb. i can download 4gb in around 1.5h. i'd take longer to go to a shop than download - not to mention the hassle - , therefore i'd download for sure. what i've seen is people more interested in having the box and booklet rather than worrying about download times.

Most games turn up a day or 2 before release as companies like Amazon and play.com get the stock in up to a week before release, so they can post the orders out.
And I'm in the UK as well. Paying for up to 20mb but getting a crappy 2.5mb less than a mile from a big exchange.
Nothing can be done about the wiring as I'm in a communal block of flats and BT can't very well rip up the whole block to sort the internal wiring out :(
Plus I still prefer physical copies of games. What if you use the limit of downloads on 5 activated machines (due to your PSV breaking down and being replaced)? At least with a physical copy you ALWAYS have the game to hand.
