Games are being delayed, PSN is having problems, and Sony is still being targetted by Anonymous. This week certainly wasn't a big ball of happy, so since it's Easter let's take a short break and just look back at the Easter Eggs we found in games throughout the years that made us smile, or maybe even crack up.
Adding easter eggs to games have long been a tradition in the video game industry since Atari programmer Warren Robinett added his digital signature to Adventure so that gamers know who really made the game. These can range from simple images or text messages like the example above to more intricate ones that require a lot of work to unlock. One example of the latter is getting Cloud Strife in Final Fantasy Tactics. The process was convoluted but the payoff was huge for Final Fantasy VII fans.

The very first easter egg I encountered was in an old top down racing game for the NES. Sometimes, a guy who looks suspiciously like Superman would do a quick flyby on the left side of the screen. I can't quite remember the name of the game, though, so if anybody does please leave a comment. One of the most popular easter eggs that come to mind is Diablo 2's secret cow level. Just as the name suggests, it was a secret level populated by hostile cows. Killing the lot of them would net players a rather sizeable amount of loot and call out the challenging Cow King.
At the risk of sounding too old, other ones that I enjoyed were the Doom-esque level in MS Excel 95, Reptile in Mortal Kombat, and the entire Cafe of Broken Dreams encounter in Fallout 2. It just goes to show that I haven't had enough time lately to actually try and find hidden extras in newer games. What about you guys? Take a stroll down memory lane and post your favorite easter eggs in the comments section or on the QJ.NET forums.
