PoV: Ubisoft's DRM scheme returns

Ubisoft's controversial always-on, PC DRM scheme is making a return with the release of Driver: San Francisco.

So who's looking forward in getting the long awaited Driver: San Francisco now? First, Ubisoft slapped the game with with a "Uplay Passport," its own version of online pass which restricts online play and other contents to those who bought a second-hand Ubisoft game.

Now, the publisher has confirmed that the PC version of Driver: San Francisco requires a permanent internet connection to play the game. A recent tweet from the official Driver Twitter account said: "PC version requires permanent internet connection." It's also been reported that the recently delayed PC edition of the upcoming god-game, From Dust, will also use Ubisoft's DRM scheme.

Ubisoft has already received a lot of backlash from PC gamers over its always-on internet DRM when it was first introduced last year. The problems arise when authentication servers suddenly crash or become unresponsive, preventing customers from playing legally purchased copies of games such as Assassin's Creed 2, Silent Hunter 5 and Settlers 7.

Way to ruin the franchise Ubisoft.

I don't see the point of DRM. Software is always cracked. By doing this , Ubisoft is doing nothing to help anyone , really. :-?

More reason to download the pirated version without this stupid "protection"
What are they trying to protect with it? It gets pirated as quick as every other game and the pirated version doesn't have this stupid drm in it so WHY is it even there?
Do they like to punish the legit gamers?

Who's the moron who thought of this in the first place? They should be sacked from ever working in the gaming industry ever again.

Yet another game I won't buy... Why do these companies think I like the DRM junk and that it protects me? All it really does get former consumers of the product to go elsewhere for games. Whether that be another company or to get the game illegitimately.

Do these companies seriously not even consider that not every single household has an active internet connection? Or what about troops deployed overseas?

Thanks for supporting your local fan base Ubisoft, screw you too.

I logged in just to say this: how ironic is it that in trying to combat piracy, they're actually making it more convenient to pirate than not? By doing this, they're neglecting customers overseas (for example in Asia, where internet is still restricted mainly to dialup and internet cafes, which again have dialup speeds) .. and sure they'd probably pirate the game anyway, but Ubisoft really isn't making a dent in the market

Aw come on ubisoft... get those investors to shut the hell up and let YOU run the company for a damned change!

I can't see the Head of Ubisoft wanting to do this, sadly, its an invested company and likely the investors are more businessmen and women just looking at profit margins and NOT the actual products.

TARGET the damned investors, NOT the company!

well first of all the driver franchise is ruined already. and that's why the drm solution is a nonsense here: with previous games being buggy and big fails, what "legacy" is there to actually protect? it would be easier to accept the drm on the likes of gta or saint's row, but driver?
