PoV: Prey 2 is not a real sequel |
Listed in: PS3, Xbox 360, PC Gaming Tags: Bethesda, Human Head Studios, prey, prey 2

The original Prey, released on Xbox 360 and PC about five years ago, starred a Cherokee named Tommy Tawodi. It garnered a lot of praise, especially in the graphics and gameplay departments. Having a complex, fleshed-out main character in Tommy didn't hurt either.
The original's ending left a lot of room for a sequel, and ealier this year Bethesda announced that it would be releasing one. Despite being developed by the studio behind the original, however, info about the upcoming Prey 2 has quickly branded it as a not-quite-sequel.
For starters, Prey 2 will follow Killian Samuels, a sherrif and prison guard who was on the plane that crashed into the alien ship during the early stages of the first game. Most of Prey 2 will be taking place on an alien world where Samuels has managed to eke out a living acting as a bounty hunter. Where Tommy got a lot of metaphysical help thanks to his heritage and his grandfather in the original Prey, judging from what details have been revealed it seems Killian will be relying more on alien technology in Prey 2.
With all these changes, it really doesn't feel right to call Prey 2 a sequel anymore. Tommy's backstory and the metaphysical elements sprinkled throughout a decidedly hardcore sci-fi shooter were very welcome addition in the original, so the first thought that sprang to mind is that this isn't really Prey 2. Even the guy's name seems to speak volumes as to where it's going. Personally, I prefer to think of it as more of a side story; not Prey 2 but more like Prey: Bounty Hunter or something.
Of course, that final Prey scene still does make me think that Human Head will somehow throw Tommy back into the thick of things somewhere in the midst of Prey 2 to better integrate the two games. That's what I'm hoping for, at least. What about you? Sound off in the comments section or head to the QJ.NET forums and discuss.
