PoV: Is PC still a viable gaming platform?

PC Gaming has come a long way, back from the plain old text adventures games to the latest stunning releases. However, some people believe that the platform is now slowly dying and is no longer relevant.

But Dawn of War and Space Marine developer Relic Entertainment think otherwise.

"For us, the drive to make PC is, really big, established, DOW community, they're PC gamers, there's probably going to be crossover to Space Marine. It felt like it made sense to make a Space Marine game for PC, " Relic's marketing manager James McDermott told Eurogamer in a recent interview.

"THQ has quite good traction with PC sales," McDermott revealed. "Steam numbers continue to be really good for us.

"Relic have been into PC games for a long time. We're still seeing a lot of good numbers can come from that market. We still think it's viable.

"We've already seen pre-orders are pretty high for PC on Steam.

"Some people just think it would be easier if PC went away. I just get that sense sometimes. It's because PC is such a tailored market in terms of the kind of platform you have to have. The barrier to entry is a lot higher than just, go and buy a console.

"It just seems like there's more complexity to it, which is probably somewhat true. But it is a great platform. For first-person shooters, that's still where I want to play."

And I got to agree, the PC platform offers a variety of more options than it's console counterpart. The problem with game publishers nowadays are the way they deal with piracy. They thought they can combat piracy by introducing different schemes but in the end of the day, legitimate PC buyers suffer.

Now, how about you guys? Do you think the PC platform is still a viable nowadays? How many of you own a PC and console? Share your thoughts below or continue the discussion at the forums.

This is the same as the PS Home PoV. Use it a little more and you'll see the pointless-ness of this article.

PC is def still in the game.. and MS knows this hence why with Windows 8 we are getting the ability to play 360 games on a pc.. its the best thing in the world.. and I'm sure developers will love it cuz they its only 2 platforms they have to make a game for now..

You won't be able to play 360 games on PC...

Windows 8 is bringing XBL to PC, and you think PC gaming is dying? PC gaming will be around long after the 360 and PS3 die, and long after the next console generation dies.

Games looks 10x better, most games are better to play (better accuracy), and pc games are usually cheaper. PC gaming will never end in my opinion.

I think that PC gaming has declined... I was thinking about buying a gaming PC, but decided on a console instead because if I wanted to get newer games, I would have to eventually upgrade components... With a console, you don't have to upgrade things, so you can still generally play games for many years to come.

Yes and when the console has lived it's day, it is not just a simple upgrade to it. You need to buy an entire console again to keep up with the times. That's what divide gaming consoles and PC

Exactly. It's easy to upgrade a whole console, but difficult for many to upgrade piece by piece your computer.

I recently decided to upgrade my Pc just wanting faster processor and more ram, but had to buy new motherboard so the latest components can fit, new processor, ram, graphics card & harddrive, so if you just want to upgrade to more modern components every 6 years like the average cost of a console it'll cost more than the console cost, and just a reasonable graphics card to play latest games costs you more than a Ps3.

Statistically there are more broke asses who would rather stick with consoles than mess with upgrades. Ok I'll be nice, PCs are just more expensive to really deal with and falls in a different category.

Other than that, until steam and blizzard decide to make more money go to consoles, then yea.... PC gaming will die.

By the way, blizzard is already too rich to care about consoles. They'll do it for shits and giggles. That's it.

i am perfectly ok with segregating low IQ humans who can't both learn to build computers which is almost exactly like using large Legos while being able to be smart consumers. we can just put them on consoles, as long as there is no multi-platform them console gamers won't have to worry about getting slaughtered by more accurate controls and better performance.

You can mod the hell out of a PC without having to look over your shoulders for Sony's lawyers to sue you for circumventing their damn PS3.

A PC gaming rig wont rrod or ylod on you either.

That's an old myth more people play PC then any other platform around the world especially Asia. Note, you are on a PC right now and you need a PC to make games so it will never die. :-*

Of course it is. The PC is getting upgraded every day.
Consoles probably every 4-5 years

I've been a console gamer since the NES when I was 2. Never seen the PC as a gaming platform. Only games I really ever played on the PC were RollerCoaster Tycoon and Portal.

I've been playing console games and pc games for over 20 years, pc games rule! The console games are nice but graphics and accuracy wise the pc wins for gaming.
