PoV: Finally, PC version of From Dust now playable offline |
Listed in: PC Gaming Tags: DRM, from dust, Steam, Ubisoft
After the negative backlash, Ubisoft has finally decided to release a new patch that allows the game to be played offline.

The title update, which is now available on Steam brings two things:
- Title can be played in offline mode (no connection to the Internet is required after installing the patch)
- Save file is moved from the Uplay/Ubisoft server to the local machine
The issue first arised when Ubisoft stated that the PC version of From Dust wouldn't require a constant online connection to play, only a one time DRM check, then no more. But when the game was released on Steam, everyone was surprised that it had Ubisoft's infamous always-on DRM tagged into it, preventing gamers to enjoy game offline. A move which Ubisoft later said a "misunderstanding."
Ubisoft has received a lot of heat with their DRM implementation, so hopefully, a bit of cosumer backlash like this could sway their anti-piracy DRM BS which offers no benefits to paying customers who just wants to enjoy the game.
Are you glad that the online-DRM has now been removed? Do PC games really need DRM? Share your thoughts below or continue the discussion at the forums.

If there was no DRM whatsoever, nobody wouldn't buy games, they'd just torrent them.

If anything DRM on games makes more people download the game then games without DRM.
If a game is worth buying i'll buy it, If it's a game where i'll only play for 1-2 hours then never play again Then there is no way i am spending 60$ for it.
Games like that should never cost no more then 20$ If that.
The main reason people download is the way to high price tag on games, I mean really 60$ just for 1 game???

And DRM increases piracy as a lot of people hate having to put the disc in everytime they want to play, or they hate having to have a constant connection 24/7 to play an offline game. Pirated games allow people to play the games without any of that crap so technically DRM hurts the companies (and us) more than no-DRM.
It's basically treating innoncent customers as though they were guilty of something. DRM is a waste of time and money as we all know it WILL be removed by hackers. They may as well suck it up and stop using DRM and stop blowing millions of dollars on making new DRM methods.

Not to mention all the download DRM BS that only allows you to install a game X times. Right, because no one ever reloads their OS or upgrades their machine. They Fail!
