PoV: DRM only drives people to piracy

That's the bold statement made by Lukasz Kukawski, the PR and marketing manager of CD Projekt's retro site Good Old Games site who will be offering a DRM-free version of the studios upcoming PC-exclusive title, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings.

drm-locked-cd

"What I will say isn’t popular in the gaming industry, but in my opinion DRM drives people to pirate games rather than prevent them from doing that," he said. "Would you rather spend US$ 50 on a game that requires installing malware on your system, or to stay online all the time and crashes every time the connection goes down, or would you rather download a cracked version without all that hassle?"

He went on to add: "I know people that buy an original copy of the game just so they don't feel guilty and then they will play a pirated version which is stripped of all DRM. That’s not how it should be. Let’s treat legitimate customers with respect and they will give that back.

Kukawski then pointed to the fact that DRM on games is absolutely useless. "If you see the news on gaming portals that a highly anticipated title has leaked before the release date, and you can download it from torrents without any copy protection because it has been already cracked, how can you possible believe that DRM works in any way to reduce piracy?"

DRM has long been a bone of contention between gamers and publishers since it was introduced. While you can't blame some publishers in trying to protect their respective IPs, Kukawski made a very good point, and I have to agree with him 100%, there are more better ways to combat piracy than relying on poor DRM scheme that only punishes legitimate consumers.

How about you guys? Do you agree with Kukawski? Share your thoughts below or continue the discussion at the forums.

No DRM also encourages piracy. Just look at what happened with the Humble Indie Bundle.

Quoting Depetriu:

True, but then if companies stop wasting time & money developing new DRM techniques, they can use that extra time & money on making the game a worthwhile purchase.

It really is a waste of time as they know dam well someone will find a way of stripping the DRM soon enough.

If they make good games worth buying then people will buy them. It's as simple as that.

Best way to combat piracy would be to lower the prices dramatically.

Could not agree more!!
That is the biggest factor in piracy!
I don't think DRM is that big of an issue, but whenever a game requires constant online mode, that is just annoying.

Price is no excuse to steal. Do you go around stealing porches because you can't afford them? That's ridiculous.

I actually don't pirate anything, but there is actual statistical proof that this cuts piracy down extremely.

And another way to combat piracy?? RELEASE MORE DEMO's!!

Yeah, and making everything free cuts piracy down 100%. It's a ridiculous point to maintain.

Lower the price and more people will buy regardless of piracy. So...are you really seeing less piracy or are you simply seeing more people buy that wouldn't have otherwise bought thus making the percentage of piracy lower?

Be careful with stats, they can make you look foolish depending on how you read them.

You see more people buy it that would normally download the game illegally.
It's a point that's been proven. I don't see how I used that statistic improperly.
People are less afraid to buy a game if they only spend 10 dollars on it versus 30. In fact, they are less afraid and more confident if they buy 3 games for 30 dollars.

Be careful how you refute someone's statistics just because you don't agree with the point that it supports. It can make you look foolish as that's the opposite of logic.

I was perfectly clear. What part of this did you not understand?

"Yeah, and making everything free cuts piracy down 100%."

That point is also PROVEN. Think about that for a while dude.

Anyone selling a game for $30 can't afford to sell it for $10. so right off the bat your "example" is pure garbage.

A lower price from $29.99 would be $24.99. Even then that's pretty damn good.

No, my example is that selling a $10 game would make more sales than a $30 game by more than 3 to 1! How do you prove yourself right like that?
And how can a company that can't afford to sale a $30 game with your logic sell it for $0!? Your logic makes no sense what-so-ever.

Wow, you still don't get it? You are magically making a $30 game, $10. Why? Who the hell said you could do that? Who is that even possible?

The only reason you are stating that if you take a $30 game and make it $10, it'll sell more is to prove a BS point that lower price tags will sell more games.

Like I said from the begining, that is a BS point. Because you add more magic and make it $0 you'll sell even more!!!

It's a worthless point. Period.

Just because free sells more then $1, doesn't mean that lower prices will make you more money. Lowering the price too much will cause you to LOSE PROFITS.

Otherwise, based on your BS theory, everything in the whole world would cost a buck. Why not right? They'll sell more right?

Lower prices DOES NOT equal less piracy. People pirate $1 games for crying out loud!!!

One cannot steal data. Copyright infringement is not theft. Please do not confuse the two.

I personally believe that piracy will always exist, but itcan be reduced by listening to the reasons why people pirate.

For every reason removed it can mean another legit consumer, not saying that they will, but it increases the chances of it happening.

But drm simply doesn't work except for maybe where online codes are involved.

I couldn't agree more.

I've had to pirate things because of DRM. Applications that only allow you to install X times. SCREW THAT! I reload often enough that one bites me in the butt all the time. Plus, I'm sick of calling support lines to get something activated because I activated it too many times.

Not to mention the all the times I've installed something only to have it not activate right. Going back and forth with support, SCREW THAT! Just go download the DRM crack and start playing your game!

Driver updates forcing windows to become deactivated. SCREW THAT! Just crack it and never worry about it again. You already bought it so who cares?

I completely agree. I remember when Ubisoft released assassins creed 2. Their servers were constantly having problems and I basically stopped buying their games. They are fools if they think DRM will help against piracy.

DRM encourages piracy because it inhibits rentals and used game sales, not piracy. Pirates will always find a way around DRM. Why else would the PC have the highest piracy rate?
