Jon Carmack (id Software): PC is not the market leader anymore |
Listed in: PC Gaming Tags: game sales, jon carmack, pc vs console
Ok...it took me a little while to write this story, mostly because I had to put down my metaphorical pitchfork (i.e. my keyboard used to write this) and go and douse my tangible one in petrol, ready for lynching!
But, should these comments really come as a surprise?

Undoubtedly (come on console lovers, you have to give PC this) PC remains at the forefront of technology, this is unquestioned. The Playstation 3 does close the gap somewhat, but you could have built a PC that was 5x as fast the day the PS3 released.
That said, a wealth of top level games do seem to be released on console nowadays, then to eventually reach PC (L.A. Noire, GTA).
There was a time, not so long ago, where everything revolved around the PC gaming market. Console developers copied it all, in the hope that the Playstation One or Xbox technology could handle it. But now? Perhaps Carmack is right.
“We do not see the PC as the leading platform for games. That statement will enrage some people, but it is hard to characterise it otherwise; both console versions will have larger audiences than the PC version” Carmack said in one of his latest interviews.
And there it is.
Yes a high end PC is more powerful than a console could ever hope to be, new tech comes out all the time, but game Dev's answer to the powers at be, and those powers want $$$.
Do $$$ = Good games though?
Indie development is stronger than ever at the moment, for all platforms. Even those developers we once had faith in seem to focus more on the dollar spinning than game quality (i'm looking at you Blizzard and Diablo 3!).
I'll refrain from marching on Carmack's house for now, as he is, unfortunately, correct. With the three major console user bases significantly higher than the PC Gaming user base, they will of course focus their efforts there. More reward for effort!
I need to go, my pitchfork has started a small grass fire....

lets just ignore that less and less games came out for the pc other than rts and shooters from 04-07, and lets ignore that COD sells more games and dlc on pc than the consoles combined or that bc2 has more vip codes sold than each console (not quite as much as both put together) and then fallout3/nv sold more on the pc than ether console.
so its not that consoles are a larger market, pc gamers dont buy as much crap, and we dont have people who buy wii games listed (we do have them with farmvill and that other crap but they are not represented in the NPD charts)

So he's justifying his bug ridden crapware PC version by attacking PC's as a platform on the whole.
Well then dont release your crapware on PC to milk a few more bucks out of people if you aren't capable of doing it right nimrod.
Problem solved.

Bethesda destroyed you id.
After Crytek, down you go.

Also, I kind of agree with this article. The PC doesn't seem to sell as well for a versatile audience. It's pretty much core gamers. That being said there is a larger audience with consoles because they're a bit more user friendly and less involved.

Nice Poll But, One Big Problem They Don't Count Digital Distribution Like STEAM. SO THEY LIED. Most games are like 5 USD on steam and are a way better deals so don't you think more people would buy a lot more games.

Except Blizzard games.
Steam digital sales are mainly old $5 games that don't make that much money anyways.
I said this before but
$PC$ Gaming = Blizzard

On the other hand, Indie games are great and don't usually require bleeding edge hardware. There is still hope for the PC gaming enthusiast, you just have to look a little harder.
