Are the rumors of an upcoming Nintendo 3DS redesign actually possible?

It's certainly something that I wouldn't be surprised to see Nintendo do, but I'm not so sure that the chances are that great. The problem with the 3DS isn't its design -- it was the price point.

Now that the system is $169, it's selling like crazy. In Japan, the system outsold the super popular PSP by almost five to one. Similar sales are being seen in North America, and attach rates are also increasing with the recent surge of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D.

With plenty of unique, great looking content coming this holiday season, I see no problems with 3DS sales. Plus, Nintendo is still turning a profit with the system even at $169.

This leaves the upcoming Nintendo press event in September to speculation. We've heard that Nintendo is planning to make a huge announcement, and these recent 3DS rumors have come at a convenient time. Still, I think we'll see a big game reveal. Something that will get the core gamer very excited for the system.

What game could that be? I don't think it'll be a 3DS exclusive Zelda title with Skyward Sword still yet to release. Mario is already coming out this year.

That leaves out one title: the previously rumored Monster Hunter 3DS.

They don't need to.

if the extra slide pad is really needed then they should just release it as an optional add-on. Or bundle it in with a game that its needed for.

Like you said in the article, since the price drop, well the 3DS has actually been selling. All they need to do is bring out some decent games.

Zelda won't carry the 3DS on its own.

Things will change even more so when the new Mario Kart and Mario 3D land comes out!

Resident Evil 6 is supposed to be announced in September also, I wonder if it coincides.
