PoV: What do 3DS sales mean?

Nintendo-3DS-Home

Recent sales numbers in Japan have revealed that the Sony PSP topped the Nintendo 3DS this past week. What does this mean for the future of Nintendo's handheld?

Quick answer: Nothing. Nothing at all.

The gaming market in Japan is a hard thing to crack -- they tend to like a small amount of genres, and they go absolutely crazy about the ones they do like. For instance, the PSP is only relevant in Japan due to the various Monster Hunter releases. The game that allowed the PSP to dominate this past week in Japan was a dating sim called Amagami, another extremely popular genre in Japan -- just take a look at the success of Konami's Love Plus series.

Another factor is the relatively weak launch line-up for the Nintendo 3DS. Other than Professor Layton, which was only released in Japan, what is the killer app for the system at release? Looking to the future, though, the 3DS has a fantastic line-up.

Nintendo 3DS Games Releasing Soon:

  • Dead or Alive: Dimensions (May)
  • Kid Icarus: Uprising (June)
  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D (June)
  • Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D (June)
  • Mario Kart 3D (Summer)
  • Paper Mario 3DS (Fall)
  • Super Mario 3DS (2011)

...and that's just the tip of the iceberg. Tons of new games will be announced at this year's E3, but by the time June rolls around, 3DS sales numbers will pick up.

Also, there's one last thing to consider: Nintendo's other new console releases took place during the Holiday season, whereas the 3DS released in the Spring. The 3DS broke Nintendo sales records in Europe, so things aren't all doom and gloom when you look at things without your bias-glasses on.

Sales WEEK BY WEEK mean absolutely nothing. Especially as these are not POS sales numbers. The only sales figures that matter are quarterly.

All the 'promised' games are comming. That's the moment where you can actually see how well is gonna be the 3ds. And also, remember always check the game's reception rather than just the sales.

Pac-Man and ET were the best sellers of the Atari 2600, but we all know how bad are those games actually...

you're saying that almost like thinking that all Japan was on ruins 'thanks' to the earthquake. Remember, only part of that country was affected. Not all the territory.

I hope they have some better games because I won't buy the 3DS for a bunch of remakes and rehashes.

These are cool games, but I'm tired of old remakes, sequels, prequels. What happened to Nintendo's originality.

Very few times they get good support from 3rd party companies.

Kid Icarus hasn't seen a release since the Gameboy, and OoT has never been remade.

That's true, but this is a full remake. I get where you're coming from, though.

Carl, don't get 'remake' and 'port' mixed up.
A remake is when they have people program the game again, or most of it, and use very few amounts of assets from the original game. A port is when they compile the data with different parameters and just tweak the game.
OoT is not a remake, it's a port.

And Kid Icarus is not even out, yet!

C'mon, dude. Think before you click 'Reply.'

OoT on N64 -- http://chrisrrau.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/ocarina-of-time.jpg

Completely new assets, new menus, and some new gameplay mechanics with the gyroscope. Remake. Not a port.

Kid Icarus and other 'new' games aren't even out yet, like I said. That point is still very strong and ignoring it doesn't make it go away.
And wow, you found links of Link! Doesn't mean that these games are remakes. They are ports. Like Rayman 2. Like the Metal Gear game.

When FACTS attack! LOL

3DS is very much a remake. I can't tell between N64 and GC. Never played it on GC.

Doesn't matter if its a port or remake. It's the same game everyone played in 1998. For some reason, Nintendo fans desire to pay for and play the same game.
Some new character graphics and menus don't change the game.

I disagree. If it was nothing more then a port then I wouldn't spend money on it. Surely I'm not alone with that thought. In fact, I know I'm not because others on this page and other articles expressed the same thought. So there IS SOMETHING to consider between ports and remakes.

Sure, tons of people don't care and will play ports over and over again but there's also a vast majority of people that want a little more.

In this case, port or not, it'll be 3D so...there's your more.

You have proven countless times you will buy anything with a nintendo logo on it. Only few companies deserve such brand loyalty.

I agree with Carl. I've seen a lot of footage from this game and it has tons of new assets.

As for trainwreak, even I never used to be this pathetic of a troll.
