PoV: There are way too many legendary Pokemon

Earlier today, Pokemon director Junichi Masuda said that there aren't too many legendary Pokemon in the series. He couldn't be more wrong.

"Maybe there are a lot of Legendary Pokémon across the entire series, but then if you are just looking at each title, there are not many in each," Masuda said. "It is very interesting having the number of Legendary Pokémon that we do - in the Pokémon World Championship in 2010, there was a battle among only Legendary Pokémon, and that kind of thing can happen if we have many Legendary, so it's fun."

The first Pokemon games, Red and Blue (and even Yellow, for that matter) had the perfect number of legendary Pokemon. There were the three legendary birds -- Moltres, Zapdos, and Articuno -- and then the ultimate legendary, Mewtwo. Mew was also catchable through a glitch, but it was never legitimately available.

Gold, Silver, and Crystal had a good balance as well, with the three legendary dogs (Entai, Raikou, and Suicune) and then two legendary bird Pokemon: Hoho and Lugia. Players were also able to catch Mewtwo in those two games when they return to Kanto, and Celebi was the most desired legendary in the games.

Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald versions didn't have enough legendary Pokemon that were actually good. There were the mediocre Groudon and Kyogre, and then Rayquaza, which was an excellent legendary. But then Nintendo got somewhat legendary happy, and added a trio of new legendaries in the third generation: Regice, Registeel, and Regirock. To top it off, there were two new legendary birds, a new psychic type called Jirachi, and then four forms of Deoxys.

It got even worse in Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum versions. There was a new trio -- Azelf, Mesprit, and Uxie -- a three dragon type legendaries, a "lunar duo" of legendaries, two sea guardian legendaries, and then Heatran, Regigigas, Shaymin, and Arceus. That's 13 total legendary Pokemon in one game.

13 more legendary Pokemon were added in Black and White. There's Vicinti, the "musketeer trio," Kami trio, Tao trio, Meloetta, and Genesect.

That brings the total number of legendary Pokemon to 47. What alternate reality is Masuda living in?

Mate, they need to go back and reboot Pokemon. IMO it was only good up until Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, when Pokemon wasn't flooded with ridiculously stupid creatures created from looking around the Nintendo office. A Pokemon that's a garbage bag? Fuck off; when you get to That stage and you Can't see Pokemon needs a clean start, you're easily fucked in the head. Anyone with common sense will agree.

i completely agree with you. if they would make another remake of gold that is almost exactly the same as the original, and had only the first and second gen pokemon i would buy it. im 16 and would get it, seriously i play fucking black ops, dead space, fallout... etc. but i would still get a 3ds and the game just cause it was my favorite game as a kid and it would be awesome to play it with better graphics and stuff.

they did remake gold for the DS and it was very good. as for the series itself i think it may be time to stop making new pokemon and start making a game that has all the worlds you have created and all the pokemon thus far. im 20 years old i have been around as long as the pokemon franchise. its time for something to be done about his series. Black and white are some of the best games sense the OG gold game but i want them to go back to the way that all regains are in the game

yeah i know but the remake had all the new Pokemon also, not just the originals. i personally hate all these new Pokemon that theyre coming out with these days, i actually rather playing the game boy colour games. like a friggen i think it was a toaster as a Pokemon.. I never bought past emerald because it was getting ridiculous.

Junichi Masuda is spot on. Someone looking at the entire series might be getting a little bored with it all. But people who only play a certain number of titles or people who are new, have the right amount.

That would be like saying there are way too many baseball cards in circulation. Um...no there isn't.

actually, there are way too many baseball cards in circulation.
there is a reason all the old ones (pre 70's) are worth more, and that is because a lot of them got thrown out by mothers cleaning their kids' rooms. a good chunk more were treated like toys and used for all sorts of things.

it wasn't until the 80s & 90s when people started to collect them more widely as a serious hobby, and the manufacturers saw more demand, so they printed a lot more of the same sets.

the only problem? economics 101 - supply vs. demand. you won't get a good value unless the card is in perfect mint condition.
the same thing happened to comic books too.

One problem there, even todays cards are getting thrown out and abused so 30 years from now baseball cards will be worth a pretty penny, as always.

The cycle will always continue.

I bought a few sets in the late 80's and I have more then a few cards worth over $100.

Yea, it would be boring if they only used the same ones. However, they are introducing too many in each new iteration. Either that or they are making it too easy to capture legendaries from previous iterations. I was pissed when Gold/Silver came out and you could capture the 3 dog Pokemon in the wild after I had worked my tail off getting them in Pokemon XD. They said they were making Black/White for the new generation, so I guess it's fitting that the 4th gen was and is my last foray into the Pokemon world.

dont you just love how gaming nowadays is so much easier?. I wish it wasn't all about the damn multiplayer. I loved having so much to do in The legend of Zelda OOT or the difficulty in Halo 2 on legendary and so on. i love how on pokemon after the first gen it was like "oh we found another region with even more pokemon!" and over and over and over again. how big is the damn planet anyways?. anyways the first series was best and the second was cool but the fact that pokemon keep getting stronger and stronger and theres 3 way battles now? seriously. Honestly i would love to play more pokemon but i dont like having to catch 150 plus more all over again. why cant they just add 40 more each gen or something? and not making each gen too powerfull compared the others

it was never so much they found "Another" region. almost all of the pokemon "regions" are based off of areas of Japan. B&W is based off of New York. So basically their world is as big as ours. Also it wasnt that they discovered more pokemon, its just like in the real world not all creatures are found everywhere.

i agree with the 3 way battles being way to much though. also i found the pokemon in B&W to be horribly mediocre compared to previous generations.

there never will be a shortage of new pokemon. are you sure you are not up for a 6 way battle you can see twelve pokemon on a 3 by 8 screen

i wonder how that will work. just dont use all thunder types against a ground type team using earthquake or you will loose in one turn

I don't think that's too many, after all it is "legendary" Pokemon, not extinct Pokemon...
Legendary - Having unimaginable greatness. Pertaining to legend.
It just adds more reason to get the next game.

Yes, all the legendary.... They are supposed to be legendary because people across the world knows of their legend, not because there is a legendary creature for every city.

that's alot of legendary Pokemon! but they are running out of ideas, its probably best to stop making new crap and develop better ideas in Pokemon while still retaining its awesomeness.. anyways why haven't they brought giant Pokemon in the game they have them in the shows? it would be cool if they have a rarity equal to the shiny Pokemon

I was able to keep up with all the pokemon till the second generation and semi of the 3rd only if they was common.

But I'm completely dumb founded when it comes to 4th and 5th generation.

I would like to see a remake of Pokemon Emerald. But make is start of like Pokemon Blue/Red/Yellow... Advance to the Ju-On region (I think that's the second series start? anyone can correct me on that one if I'm wrong please.)and start the adventure there. Than go on to the next region w/e that is and leave it like that. Make is similar to the cartoon series and not a separate series of it self.

it would be a large game in terms of memory it from my knowledge give or take it would take at least about 25mb+25mb+30mb gen 1,2 and 3 and so on depending what is programmed/included in the game. and it would take a long time to program correctly without bugs, and it may need a large ram to buffer or it may lag. so basically it is possible but would take a large amount of memory when compared to other pokemon games, and it would be likley for there to be tons of bugs skipped over in it

there is only one legendary pokemon missingno how did yall forget to mention it in the article. It has two watergun moves and uses legendary power to duplicate your items in the bag. it can make your game change colors and pokemon face the wrong way. No other pokemon can do that.

To be honest? There is too many lengendary pokemon,but I didn't care! The problem came when there was too many simple pokemon being made. Like 50%/60% of the pokemon suck big time. A Garbage pokemon? come on!! there weren't even trying. all I wanted was easy and bitter way to meet friends,new people,battle and have little fun with people kind like halo online. Thats the only reason the play mostly for and bcs their boring. The things I liked about pokemon and pretty sure others will agree:

1)The new map was great.
2)A easier way to trade
3)A great new battling (rotation)
4)A lot more things to do even though it was overwelming
5) Nice ending battle elite four and N
6)loving the gym strength, bcs they beat me the first time. I underestimating this time :)
7)loving all the battling I meet
8)cool story mode
9)like most of the battle songs like (subway)
10)Even I have mention all the problem and really suck problems and the the things I hate!!!!! I give it 5 out of 10

The problem is the tag they started out with - 'gotta catch' em all'. I think that's where the pressure to create large amounts of new pokemon for each generation comes from. Naturally over time this became a problem, and now we've got a virtual blight on our hands. They need to get out of that loop now.

As for the legendaries...I found this post by googling 'too many legendaries' after going through the list of gen three new additions. I'm twenty four by the way, but with an emulator it makes an entertaining way to while time occasionally. Or it did - the whole thing appears to be complicating itself in ultimately unpleasant ways... I may quit after gen 4. But anyway, I was looking at the list, and thinking: there's nearly two whole teams of legendaries here! And most of them aren't even that great! What the heck! That just undermines the entire 'legendary' status in the first place. I think the argument about individual titles is largely irrelevant - remember they made improved remakes of the originals, most players will cover all titles, and not worrying that after three the very term legendary is starting to seem downright humdrum is stupid. Their designs haven't improved either.

I've been a fan since Red and Blue. While most original fans say "Pokemon sucked after generation 1," I disagree. I think the games have gotten so much better, and though I do believe Gens 1-2 are perfect, I have come to like gens 3-5. There are certain pokemon in each gen I wish were never made, yeah, but I've come to like the majority of them. BUT legendaries are RUINING THE GAMES! I can't have a battle with ANYONE anymore without them having all legendaries or 6 Arceus's. I miss having battles with regular Pokemon. I get they want legendaries for their anime movies, but hey they've reused legendaries before in movies like Celebi and the Dog Trio in the Zoroark Movie and Mew in the Lucario movie, why not do that?
Here are the legendaries I would keep if I was in charge, the others I would tell all Pokemon fans were actually experiments that went horribly wrong (like Mewtwo...but he's ok...) and that the remaining legendaries all died.
KEEPERS:
Generation 1 - All of them
Generation 2 - All of them
Generation 3 - Weather Trio, Deoxys
Generation 4 - Dragon Trio, Manaphy, Darkrai/Creslia, Shaymin
Generation 5 - Dragon Trio, Genesect
That would bring the legendaries to a total of 26 rather than the ridiculous 47.

All the other pokemon would be killed off. I would tell everyone they never existed. Then I would always have a rule the MOST you could possibly introduce in new gens would be 6, no more...

Oh yeah, and you should ONLY be allowed 1 legendary Pokemon in ANY type of battle

Other things I think should be changed.
In gym battles, you can only use the same number of Pokemon the gym leader does. The battle start reguarly, with the first guy in your lineup being thrown out. But after that you have to chose your remainging Pokemon to use. Would make the game more difficult and fun. ALSO should make legednaries PHENOMINALLLY difficult to catch. I'm talking so hard, that you would be lucky to have 3. But game freak would also have to not allow any more action replay to get rid of the cheaters.
