PoV: Smartphones will never replace handhelds

Devices such as the iPhone and other smartphones are growing more and more popular in the gaming industry thanks to services such as the App Store and Android Marketplace, but they will never replace dedicated handhelds.

There are very few games on the App Store and Android Marketplace that are actually good. Most games are shallow and would be considered shovelware on any other platform.

There's no doubt that the App Store and Android Marketplace are great for small developers. Each service offers a great way for their games to get noticed, and due to the low price of most games, it sends shoppers into an impulse buying spree. Especially those who are used to games with more content -- I recently spent $30 on a dozen games, and the only ones that were worth the money were Galaxy on Fire II and Infinity Blade.

Even then, both of those games were extremely shallow. Compared to the Nintendo DS and PSP, and now the 3DS and soon the NGP, the iPhone and similar devices will never replace handhelds. The games just aren't deep enough. Would you rather play a handheld Zelda title or Angry Birds? Would you rather play a handheld Final Fantasy title or Cut the Rope?

They already replaced the need to carry 10-15 other devices and handhelds will have their day, i mean you can already run games on the Unreal engine on some phones and they'll be running quad core 2ghz+ processors soon so that's not the problem, as soon as they figure out some way to get physical controls on like some kind of tactile feedback screen then consoles will be in the minority.

Sadly, the companies behind it don't know much about their material and consumers.

They're definitely not going to when games like angry birds are their top sellers.I honestly cant see them going very far beyond casual gaming.

Even if they do get proper gaming controls and better games I personally wouldnt much care to be getting text's or phone calls while im in the middle of a game and possibly already aggravated.

"God damnit what do you want?Im kind of busy mom"

Hehe.

A console is not a phone. And my phone doesn't need Zelda. It needs caller ID, and a contacts list....that's it. I'll tell you what's obvious, the people who buy the same half craped "i-spit" from Steve Job's mouth every year. And the "i-robot" consumer's perpetual dogma in a product that has but one practical use, and that one use is as a bulge for your money burnt pocket. My "i-thingy" can make calls, play games, send texts, check stocks, write term papers, make the coffee, clean the windows, create energy through the synergy of two homo-erotic elephants...and? If I wanted a do it all, know it all robot I could touch, I'd hire a space hooker from the future, and even she wouldn't go so far out of her way to ask if I'd like fries with that. And that's what it is...a big, whopping side order of useless gadgetry we never we wanted, but cant get rid of now that we have...Hmm, I guess "i-dont care's" are like space hookers in more ways than one.

Gimme the console any day.

Was this PoV really needed??? they just pointed out the obvious. Here's some more PoV that i guess you authors feel worthy:

PoV: Cats are a different species than dogs.... WOW REALLY??? i DID NOT KNOW DAT!?!? /sarcasm

PoV: A Playstation3 has better graphics and more indepth games than a SNES. OMGOMGOMG I just so never knew dat :S /sarcasm

PoV: Nintendo released 3DS in March. Here's an example on what to talk about in teh article: "in my point of view, i think that the nintendo 3DS did infact release in the month of march. now, we all have our views, but i'm pretty sure that mine isn't biased."

^^there you go QJ, hope to see you use some of those topics in your next articles /sarcasm

Why are you being so negative, I found this topic interesting. Cat + Dogs arent related to games, the 3DS release is not a opinion, its a fact. Ps3 has better graphics - Fact.

On Topic : All the Apps are really shot games, once you really start enjoying them, you've ocmpleted them.

and the statement "Smartphones will never replace handhelds" isn't a fact? well guess what, it is. so if they feel it's okay to write PoVs with facts, why not use some of the one's i suggested.

Well, POV stands for point of VIEW. This is just someones view on a topic.

But I see where you're coming from. This "view" is pointless.

"Smartphones will never replace handhelds"

Of course. That is on par with PSP will never replace NDS and NDS will never replace PSP.

Nothing replaces the other and THANK GOD!!! It's called competition, it's called having a market. These things are what makes consumer products GREAT!!!

comparing smartphones to gaming handhelds is like comparing the ps3/360 with the wii, they aren't even in the same category and are sold to different markets.
