PoV: Should Nintendo expand to mobile platform? |
Listed in: Nintendo 3DS Tags: Nintendo, Satoru Iwata
Things aren't really looking up at the Nintendo headquarters these days. With its latest handheld suffering from a lackluster start that eventually lead to a desperate price drop and specific details about the Wii U still under wraps, the big N has suffered yet another set back, as some investors and analysts now wants the company to venture in the booming mobile platform.

Though Saturo Iwata lambasted the platform before that caused quite a stir in the industry, the 3DS flop is one indication that the tide is changing, one that is pointing to a new direction. A dilemma that Iwata is now facing, either continue to alienate themselves or give in to the pressure.
"Iwata, who’s said Nintendo will only make titles for its own products as long as he’s in charge, should scrap that strategy to avoid further alienating investors who’ve driven the stock to six-year lows," said Masamitsu Ohki, a fund manager at Stats Investment Management Co. “Smartphones are the new battlefield for the gaming industry,” Ohki added. “Nintendo should try to either buy its way into this platform or develop something totally new.”
Last month, Nintendo shares jumped after Pokemon Co., announced that they are developing an app for the iPhone and Android platform. JPMorgan Chase & Co. quickly sent a note to its clients saying the move "indicated Nintendo may begin making titles for products outside its proprietary hardware." But hours later, Nintendo denied the announcement, saying they haven't change their strategy and were only interested in developing games for their own hardware, a move that wasn't well received by the market.
“They just don’t get it,” MF Global FXA Securities Ltd. said in a sales note that day, referring to Nintendo. “Sell the stock, because a management once feted for creative out-of-box thinking have just shown how behind the times they are.”
“Nintendo should aggressively make acquisitions or increase returns to its shareholders,” said Tetsuro Ii, president of Tokyo-based Commons Asset Management Inc., which held 2,200 Nintendo shares as of February, according to the company’s website. “It’s management’s task to consider how to make use of the cash.”
Nintendo is currently in a limbo, one that could either make or break the core of the company. Should they give in to the pressure this early, like what they did on the drastic 3DS price cut or stick to their core-centric strategy, one that might shake up the foundation of the company.
What's your take on this folks? Should Nintendo now venture in the mobile platform or do you want them to stick on their core strategy? Share your thoughts below or continue the discussion at the forums.

meh. I do agree that they need to stay dedicated handheld gaming. I think Nintendo's biggest and really their only flaw right now is that they're expecting their merchandise to sell based on name alone. That's all well and good but you always, always have to give the consumer some kind of incentive (or security blanket in the case of over-pricedness) to snatch whatever you have.

You have programs based on SOFTWARE not hardware. That's Nintendo's problem. We no longer live in a hardware concentric world. Operating systems are now designed to work on many different types of hardware. Even Microsoft came around and Win8 will have an ARM version.

Umm... sure? I mean its not like they already have one. so there's an open market waiting for them to tap into.
