PoV: $250 is too expensive for a handheld

Nintendo made the right choice in lowering the price of 3DS.

Nintendo announced today that their latest handheld game system, the Nintendo 3DS, will get a worldwide 40% price cut.

This is a great move by Nintendo -- $250 is just too much for a handheld video game system. It shouldn't have been $250 from the start.

I see this move less as a reaction to Vita's price as much as it's a reaction to the current gaming market. The two biggest complaints with the 3DS are its high price and lack of initial games. The games are being fixed -- tons of amazing titles are launching in September and beyond, and starting next month, current 3DS owners are getting ten free NES and GBA games for download.

Software is on the way, and Nintendo has finally fixed the price point. Considering the Wii originally released at $250, consumers were weary in buying a handheld system that costed as much as a console system, especially in this bad economy.

even at $250 is still too much especially when you consider the us gets it cheaper and the australian dollar is still higher than the american... they cant get away with excuses like taxes or shipping costs, that is bs especially for the price hike.....

id rather import and save on money that is if i ever wanted to invest on a 3ds but its just getting to become another ds with its library going to consist of tons of crapware and with only a select few of decent games especially allot of devs cancelled their half decent games....

it looks like now the psvita is going to be the ultimate portable gaming system, and it will be if sony advertises it as such and nothing else as there are many devices that beats it on everything else

$250 was too expensive for the 3DS considering the tech involved. I would pay that for a Vita but not for this. Nintendo was forced to drop the price due to slow sales (which were partly due to a lack of s/w).

Eh, I had no problem with the price. But then again I traded in ~$150 worth of stuff and got $180 in credit towards the new one. Now I get a bunch of free stuff. Win-Win.

So what if I have only have internet connection at the library that's 30 minutes away due to the location of my house? How would Nintendo plan to compensate those people?

Who are you to say that? Maybe having a mobile game device is more suitable if he has no internet instead of having a home console. A home console can't be taken to a place with free WiFi as easily and you know some people do live where no internet connections are possible, right? Wales, Greenland, etc.
If he wants a handheld, why can't he have one?

Well, more like playing single player, and on top of that why have a computer too if having no internet? He probly has internet, just no DSL, thus why he goes to the library, imagine the lag we all get in this day and age from a 56ker.

If you think about it handhelds should usually cost more than stationary consoles.
After all more technology probably goes into shrinking hardware while keeping it powerful enough to run visually appealing games.
Consoles should only cost $150-$250 IMO.

dude...look at the capabilities of the ps3 and xbox 360, then read your comment back to yourself.
the ps3 plays blueray discs and has photorealistic high definition graphics, as does the 360 minus the blueray. the games and content for these consoles are 4 times as expensive as it is to create for a handheld market. the content on these systems can be in excess of 5 - 7 gigabytes of data and on multiple discs. thats alot of power that the dinky little 6 button 2 screened pile of plastic cant handle. (at least not in this lifetime) not ripping on the 3ds, i love the thing even though im blind in one eye and the 3d is completely useless and i wish they had made a model that could compensate for that but oh well!

Also I wasn't commenting on "power" I was saying that the technology that goes into a handheld is probably more than they put into a stationary.

I had no problem with the price as well. But I do feel it's the right move. This is why dedicated handheld gaming works unlike the Android and Iphone games. Yeah they may be good but I'm a cheap ass and would rather pay a cheap ass amount.

The price was way too much for the specs you got. I bought one and I felt totally ripped off the first day I played with it. The Vita at least looks like a handheld ps3 which is what you should be getting for the 250-300 dollar price point. What we got with the 3DS was less than gamecube quality performance.

SMall device should cost way more then huge console because your shirking hardware and it portable . But ninendo use old hardware to make production. 3rd no powerful then iPod touch 4g.

i like that now niintendo is dropping its price its a issue to sell a portable gaming device at $250, the article writer doesnt seem to smart, only reason nintendo dropped the price is the psvita no matter what u said thats why, because nintendo is a company known to stick with a price till they are treatened t drop price like wii, it dropped to 169 i think when 360 beccame 200 and it had its first price drop just a few months ahead of that. just nintendo shouldnt be sellin a portable device for that much since they never have expensive tech but vita should be a higher price then 250 so no complains on a 250 price

Nobody was expecting the basic Vita model to be $250. I think that was a shock to everyone. I was guessing the two models would be $300 and $350 so I guess I wasn't too far off.

I bet Nintendo's still making a profit off every 3DS sold, even at $150. I also have no doubt that the PSV will be sold at a loss at $250.
