PoV: What Sony needs for NGP to succeed
|
|
Sony is rumored to reveal the launch details for its next-generation PlayStation Portable (NGP) at E3 in June.

We've already know about its pretty impressive specs, the question now is "what does Sony need in order to make the quad-core handheld marvel successful?
It should have a reasonable price to compete in the market With quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor, 5-inch OLED display touchscreen, dual analog sticks, a rear-mounted touchpad and dual cameras on its front and rear, there is no doubt the NGP is a beast, and most likely its price tag will reflect that. But I hope Sony will not go overboard on this one. It was previously rumored that the NGP would come in two models, a WiFi only version with a US$ 250 price tag and WiFi + 3G version which will cost US$ 350.
Create a strong launch lineup From first party titles to third party support, bring in the big guns and go all out to generate hype to get peaple excited. We already saw the likes of Uncharted, Resistance, and Killzone on the device, a new God of War, Motorstorm and Gran Turismo won't hurt either.
Make all PSN games compatible with the device Many developers showed footage of their console games running on the device with minimal loss in quality at this year's TGS. What about the hundreds of PlayStation Network games that are currently available for the PS3? It would be cool to play the likes of Dead Nation, Bionic Commando Rearmed and Braid on the go, earn trophies and progress to a new level, then transfer it to your PS3 when you get home.
Good catalogue of games An HD remake of past PSP and PS2 titles won't hurt. New exclusives, more cross platform titles plus major releases from third party devs will definitely help out the device.
Have a good marketing push Create a Kevin Butler clone that can effectively market the NGP and get rid of the Marcus campaign. A good marketing strategy could go a long way towards bolstering sales of the device.
Less firmware updates, more features I'm tired of updating my system that that only contains a minor update. Sure the device needs to be secured, but I also want to see some added new features once a new update comes out. Sony can always look around the homebrew community if they have run out of ideas on what feature to be added next.
That's just some of my ideas so far. If you have more, add em up below or continue the discussion at the forums.

Pretty much this. PSP users got alot of firmware updates but barely new functions, although that depends of the region. For example, the japanese 6.35 firmware has: 1seg (app for tv), Comic reader and x-Radar Portable, meanwhile the firmware version of my region has only the comic reader
And please, stop the Marcus campaign... that shit was awful.
And about the games, i kinda agree: is not that bad having some ports and remakes on the psp2. But lately i have a need to buy new games! rather than just the same game redone again

50-100$ price diffence don't matter for me as long as the games are worth the buy. This thing is a best and can most likely emulate 3DS and play a movie at the same time
