PoV: Is SWTOR a WoW-Killer?

Remember last week when Bobby Kotick from Activision expressed his doubts over Star Wars: The Old Republic’s profitability? Here’s your answer, Mr. Kotick: Since going into beta, over two million players have spent time in the world of SWTOR, with over nine million hours of playtime between them. This is certainly good news for EA, which has a huge, huge pile of money invested in the Bioware-helmed MMO, and it shows that when it comes to demand, Star Wars: The Old Republic is right where it needs to be.

Right now, the paid MMO market is dominated by World of Warcraft. The game still boasts 10 million players, and its expansions have seen unrivaled success. It’s a phenomenon more than a game, and challengers to the throne have never been in short supply – Aion was supposed to be the game that killed WoW, much like Warhammer Online before it. Many in the industry think that SWTOR has the potential to knock WoW from its perch, but I’m just not convinced.

The thing about MMOs is that you play them with your friends. I, for example, still play World of Warcraft because it’s how my sister and I hang out despite being a thousand miles apart. Back when I lead a guild (BWL days), it was made up of real-life friends. Hell, our main tank was my girlfriend. And I wouldn’t have left WoW to play another game unless everyone came along with me. I think quite a few people that would play SWTOR are in that position – and it’s definitely not limited to WoW players.

There are certainly going to be people that move from WoW to SWTOR. But I doubt enough people will leave one for the other to significantly impair World of Warcraft. Because, you see, that’s the distinction we have to make – sure, The Old Republic may land two, five, or even eight million subscribers, but in order for it to down WoW, those people can’t be playing both games. For The Old Republic to “win” the battle, a massive number of people will have to abandon WoW and play The Old Republic instead.

I don’t think we’re going to see that type of activity, and we’re definitely not going to see it right at launch. Then again, WoW has already lost two million subscribers this year, so anything’s possible.

What do you think? Can any game topple the WoW empire, or is it something that just has to fade with time?

Hard to leave WoW i agree, if everyone else plays on there.

Luckily my friends (who i know IRL) are switching over also, so it will mean saying goodbye to some guild mates ... But SWTOR is just more fun in my opinion

Just wait to see the 1st quarter 2012 numbers to see WoW crumble into at most half its current subscriber total. WoW is getting old, and its members know that. SWTOR is new, graphically outstanding, voice-acted, karma-driven and like opening that xmas present you wanted when you were a kid everytime you login. Oh yeah, did i forget to mention, it's STAR WARS!! :D

I'm a little different in that I DIDN'T play WoW with my friends. I played since 2007 (a little before BC) and between BC and Wrath had a casual guild with around 200 unique people in it. The reason I stopped was because Blizzard just kept nerfing everything to the point of it not taking any skill, and once one expansion came out they just completely ignored the old content, which in my personal opinion was much, much better.

I played the beta of ToR, and I actually stopped playing it because every character I rolled had a great introductory storyline and I didn't want to spoil it. Questing was nice and smooth, switching between instanced quests and non-instanced zones were seamless, and it was very animated.

As much as I hate WoW, theres only room for one big mmo out there and WoW is going to stay. It does not really take a genius to see that WoW has many things in its favor. 1. Its was out first 2. its already has alot of subscribers 3. It can hold its subscribers longer than the free month the game comes with. That being said I predict everyone will go back to WoW after about 2 months, as bad as WoW is its got good foundation if anything is going to kill WoW, its going to be Blizzard when they don't feel like churning out more patches.

I think any game at this point has a shot at tackling the WoW issue. WoW is a solid MMORPG, which was quite good until the recent expansions which greatly lowered the difficulty which is a good thing but at the same time allowed a younger population to sweep in an these younger and new players dont have the same level of experience as past players are are greatly burdening the existing population. with the upcoming expansion the original playerbase as far as i can see it are going to leave as the game is once again being equalized for newer players and thus more new and younger players will be joining at severely reduced experience rates. the playerbase is already dropping, this game might kill it, it might not but WoW is definately dying

Every new MMO is a WOW killer and every new FPS is a Halo killer. It feels like 2006 again when gaming magazines are so desperate to make a cover headline...

I agree with most of this, but I think Halo has been sufficiently killed.

People need a change, wow was great, TBC was amazing, WOTLK was brilliant and Cataclysm should be called a patch no an exp.
The constant changes is new things make the game interesting but the constant changes in things you know and you like how they are is the error of Blizzard like permanent change the clases and skills, so you have your character for years and now suck ass so, so many people is disappointing with those changes.
