Sound Off: Should Apple Get Into Gaming? |
Listed in: iPad Tags: apple, iTunes, Nintendo, Sony, tim cook, valve
We talked yesterday about Apple CEO Tim Cook’s visit to Valve, and the rumors that the visit was more than just casual. In fact, some in the industry suspect Cook and Apple may in fact be working on some sort of home gaming console, which will be integrated with their next TV box—and they’re looking to Valve for help.

Apple already has a pretty strong presence in the games industry—millions upon millions of tablet and mobile phone owners have downloaded titles through the company’s proprietary iTunes Store. However, hardware is always a gamble, and the industry presently has three strong competitors that have been duking it out for decades.
So the question is this: Do you think Apple has what it takes to enter the home console fray? Their supposed technology would be a streaming/gaming hybrid, but would still be aimed at gamers across the globe.
Can Apple find a place with Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo all introducing new hardware over the next few months?

Microsoft did it and was/is successful, so I don't see why Apple wouldn't be able to as well.

Besides I wanna see something to SHAKE UP the TODAY shit gaming industry. Honestly, it's becoming am embarrassment to be associated with gaming/gamers nowadays!
This APPLE/STEAM console/TV would of course have to run on an x64 processor which means for it to be compatible with STEAM released PC(x86/x64) titles. it's gonna need a Windoze environment of some kind, I'm sure M$ won't give them the license to do that, unless M$ are gonna get a nice slice of the pie too>?
Let's wait and see shall we?!LOL

There are too many apple zombies out there as it is, the last thing we need is a subpar gaming system from them.

Apple can do hardware. They always have.
In fact some would argue that the iPod and iPad are already mobile game consoles.

What else would you like them to do? Come to your home and just do it all for you?

Wrong. It's called LOSING money. If you set a price too high, people wont buy it. According to your logic we should make everything cost 1 million dollars. Then we can all be rich!
"Advertising needs to reach everybody."
Very good! Which is why they advertise on TV, in their stores and at conferences. What part of that is too complicated?
"And two massive commercials isn't enough. There should be 3 or 4"
Because you said so? Ha! Apple already had DOZENS of commercials about their iDevices. Having two based on a specific function is total overboard. Yet you think they should have 3 or 4 based on only a single function of these deices? You are fucking nuts. No one has ever done that. EVER. Even their other commercials show a hint of the function so it's there for everyone to see.

I said TOO HIGH. Obviously $2k for a computer isn't too high in this day and age.
Try to sell them for 5k and see what happens.

It would be interesting to see if they could make a viable console alternative to what's already available.
Would they make their own hardware vis-à-vis Sony or would they subcontract that through companies like Intel and AMD like they do their prefab PCs (iMac, Mac Pro, MacBook, etc..)?
My best educated guess would be the latter and building this all into something like the Mac mini or even have it become the new generation of the Mac mini and just call it the iGame or the Mac Play.
