New Unreal Engine Requires At Least 10 Xbox 360’s Of Power |

Realistic graphics. Not necessarily necessary in videogames, but for the ones that require it (ie. Grand Theft Auto, Metal Gear Solid and sports games) it’s something that a games designer can only dream for; it’s down to the hardware.
The founder of Unreal Games Tim Sweeney says that to get perfect visuals in terms of realism, a computer would require 5000 teraflop’s of power. The demonstration video showing the new Unreal Engine last year showed a very detailed and technologically demanding title by the name of Samaritan (you can see it below).
The title used only 2.5 teraflops of power as opposed to Sweeney’s ideal vision of 5000, so his estimate is more than safe, as even at 2.5 teraflops the video looks mighty impressive.
All these numbers still mean little to you? You want a reference point? The Xbox 360 has 0.25 teraflops, so you do the math.
I’m in the process of saving up 20,000 Xbox 360’s so I can tape them together to simulate reality. Once I have a perfect visualisation and simulation I’ll be able to play The Sims properly.
But really, what are your views on technology regarding games? Games that don’t follow the realistic art direction would only benefit to a certain extent; Super Mario Galaxy pushed to it’s ideal limits wouldn't need a fraction of the 5000 teraflops needed for reality.

Second, games don't need "graphics" but are better with them.
The whole point of some games being high in graphics(mostly first-person shooters) is to be realistic to an extent and make it feel like you're there to experience a world you normally wouldn't be able to.
I mean seeing a realistic Mario of course would most likely not be as good as a fictional Mario, but hey you could play Pokemon, and have it seem like you have a real Pikachu...

Some people would say pokemon and minecraft are the sweetest apples on the tree, others would point out they are the graphical equivalent of crab apples when next to crysis 2 and mass effect.
A game's beauty is in the eye of the beholder, there is also beauty in the way a game experience is developed. Some demonstrate beauty with great gameplay and an amazing story, others with badass graphics or a multiplqyer experience devoid of qny storyline whatsoever.
With such titles as unreal tournament and gears of war, it is easy to tell where epic games falls into that spectrum.

looks just like the last unreal engine with better lighting and more detail. Will this be actually gameplay potential or just cinematic movie? Can they sell it for theatrical movies (Avatar 2)?
they can still make great games with the old engines. Hell they are still using Valve's engine for games.
What is Unreal trying to prove?

That's true, but with that take on gaming, we'll never have upgraded hardware/software.
It's like saying that we shouldn't have flying vehicles because the current land-based ones still work fine...

This video shows that pc gaming at least for the moment is definitely not dead. None of the current games systems could run these kinds of graphics as there all to out dated, hardware at least.

Game need to go back, they need to look more fantasy like, not FPS rubbish. I mean yeah "some" games out there look good in realistic graphics, inFamous, Halo, Final Fantasy, Resistance, Unreal Tournament and a few others. But they should still focus on making games look cartoony.
The main thing I'd love to see is games that look less realistic, because if you want to to start mass murdering people in really realistic graphics, grab a knife and go on a killing spree. There is not bloody point in graphics being so realistic that they beat real life.
Nothing is as realistic as living, Games are to escape from reality and enjoy seeing the world differently.
