Europa Universalis IIIIf Europa Universalis III sounds like an epic it's because it is. The strategy game from Paradox Interactive involves controlling the fate of a nation and challenges players to transform it into a great global empire. To do so requires players to engage in exploration, trade, diplomacy and, if necessary, warfare. Europa Universalis III is no sci-fi, however. In fact, the game claims unparalleled historical accuracy for over 250 countries.

Each nation will have an option to alter either of the following on a country level, which in turn affects the gameplay:
  • The Court: Recruiting famous historical personalities (e.g. Mozart, Descartes and Copernicus) as court advisors gives players different bonuses and skills in administration, diplomacy and military.
  • Economy: Sliders indicate exactly what investments players make in different areas and control over how to spend monthly income. Each decision will affect stability, production and trade.
  • Troops: Players choose different type of troops (Infantry, Cavalry, Artillery) and the opportunity to choose "national flavors" like Gaelic Free Shooters or Caroleans. All choices bring different skills and traits to the table.
  • Religion: Tolerance towards other religions and players can convert to other religions in the same group. But tolerance towards one religion results in equally intolerance to another. Players can claim to be the sole defender of the faith result in bonuses but also added risk.
  • Government: Illustrates the national ideas chosen and acquired by the country. The domestic sliders allows players to determine what type of society they want to govern, for instance a democratic or autocratic, very innovative or extremely narrow traditional etc.
Its open-ended gameplay offers players endless number of choices, gameplay variations, and outcomes. Few of us will have the opportunity to leave our marks in history, but Europa Universalis III makes that possible, at least in virtual history.

Europa Universalis III scheduled for a worldwide release in Q1 2007.
