Valve: Piracy is a non-issue |

I'm a big fan of Valve and Steam and it seems that when it comes to buying games, if it's not in a box or a bundle, it'll be on Steam and paid for with my PayPal account. So when Gabe Newell, the managing director of Valve, comes out and says it's not an issue for his company, it does make you wonder quite quickly why it isn't?
The company is extremely solid as a platform, let alone financially more successful than any other form of digital distribution that I know that isn't on a console. So why is it a non-issue to the guys at Valve? In an interview with Cambridge Student, Newell explained that the fundamental problem about piracy is that it is motivated by high prices, however, Valve sees the problem has to do with service.
Now, the computer I write on and the computer I game on are never one and the same. The one I game on, has Steam going 24/7 and is able to be accessed at any time (as long as Steam isn't down). Gabe explains that with service comes success and gives the example that if you offer a pirate a product anywhere on the planet, that's legally porvided 24/7, as opposed to waiting it out in a brick and mortar store for 3 months, they're gonna either get it online or find the "pirate's service is more valuable."
Newell notes that the DRM solutions implemented by many companies tend to restrict all consumers and "create uncertainty" among gamers, developers and investors alike. This harms everyone in the industry and gives the gaming industry less of a leg to stand on when it comes to being a viable business.
Gabe continued to discuss Steam as a service saying that it was their goal to create greater service value than the pirates and that it's been successful enough for them for it to be a "non issue" for their company. He gives the example that pre-Steam, many companies wouldn't worry about Russian games, translations or even selling to that market and now "it's the largest market in Europe", which is pretty awesome.

Programs are doom from the start because of all freeware and open source programs.
Images are basically free because of things like DeviantArt and so on.
Porn you can't stop from being pirated nor is it that big of an indiscreet any more because of all the free porn, hentai, and so forth, no government will care if its pirated ether.
Last is the Gaming indiscreet which is switching to F2P, Bundle Packs, and DLC.
The Next move for the gaming indiscreet is provably some thing like Netflix. Piracy really does not hurt the economy as much as you may think because companies work around it.
