Valve Not Worried about Piracy

We’ve seen quite a few approaches to managing pirates over the last few years, with mixed results. Ubisoft’s always-on fiasco comes to mind as one of the worst examples in recent memory, and Battlefield 3’s online pass functionality seems to have worked in a more positive manner.

Of course, that’s not to say that pirates didn’t have their way with both titles. And if you ask Gabe Newell what he thinks of the whole thing, you may be surprised at the answer.

In an interview with The Cambridge Student Online, one savvy gamer did just that. When asked about why gamers prefer Steam when they often shout about encumbering DRM, Newell’s response was simple: If you give players a way to buy your games, they’ll buy your games. If you lock your games behind region-encoding, staggered release schedules and DRM that makes it hard to play, they’ll pirate them instead. The argument is basically that if you’re online looking for a game, you’ll take the easiest route.

Newell went on to talk about how Steam’s primary goal is creating a better value than pirates, by pricing games correctly, providing excellent customer support, and giving gamers easy access to the games they want to play. So far, it certainly seems to be working.

It makes sense when you think about it – if a game is fairly priced and easy to download, why wouldn’t you just buy it? Piracy has a number of competing motivations, so it’s fair to say there’s no one right approach to stomping it out as an issue. Valve and companies like it are trying to limit piracy without limiting customers, and that’s an admirable effort.
What do you think would be the best way to combat piracy?

Lowering prices.
New releases should cost around 30$/€.
Who was 50+ bugs for each game every year? And there are many games worth to buy/play.

it always comes down to if its affordable, or worth the price you pay, the greed of the retailers/companies is why people start looking for free alternatives.

Well, in Greece a brand new game also costs 70€, that's 90$.
For a single game, Uncharted 3 for example.

I think steam is the perfect example of how digital distribution of games should be done. Games are accessible as soon as they are released, download speed is great and prices are fair. Its not long for games to get discounts, promotions, tons of pre-order bonus with steam, steam exclusive versions, etc... Since i got a new pc and steam reinstalled, i havent got a single pirated game in a long while

I hope Gabe is referring to PC games.Pirating games is easy to do.

Main way to combat piracy is to give okayers a reason to buy. Not because it looks cool in your collection, but look at Blizzard. Pirate Starcraft, WoW, Diablo. look at ugh... call of duty... your not gonna enjoy it as much uf u lose features...playing online.

The one thing that steam lacks is a decent steam card access like PSN cards for one.

Then you would see that other percentage of people actually buying games even though they may not have a master card available.

There are a certain type of person that refuse to use master cards or even paypal in general like me.

Please make it happen steam :-)

Oh and well said Gabe Newell

Yeah steam has the right idea if i really enjoy a game, and i dont have the money yeah piracy is a real option, but saying online passes solves it is wrong i have pirated some games in the past but ones i really enjoy i then buy, i think a true solution would be temporary access to the full game, say between 2 days and 1 week of FULL access to convince potential buyers who otherwise would pirate that it is worth their money, and the money payed would then give isntant access.

as for the cloud saving idea abe said, im sorry but that would be counter productive, as anyone who dosnt always have access to the internet would then be guarenteed to pirate or else they get no game, and the pirates will find a way around it, so all that would do is drive more customers to piracy

He said it right but will he get it right?
Yes pricing is a major factor in piracy and so is protection and a major factor is DRM.
If there is no protection then there is no reason to pirate it. If its priced so everyone could afford it then everyone would buy it.
If its such a good game its worth buying then people would buy it.
If all 3 points are met then it wont be pirated.

Honestly, this is the most logical article that I've read all year on game piracy. Props to Newell. Good article mate.

i used to pirate ALL my games... then i downloaded steam and bought them all... I live in argentina so games are really expensive (over 100 USD for new releases) with Steam, i get them at 60/50 bucks and i don't have to wait for shipping or import taxes
