Steam forums hack further details, Gabe Newell apologizes |

You may have read our story earlier this week about the hack of the Steam user forums, well now Valve have confirmed that it was not just the forums that were compromised.
According to an announcement today by Gabe Newell, the 'intruders' gained access to the steam database that contained:
- User names;
- Hashed and salted passwords;
- Game purchase history;
- Email addresses;
- Billing addresses; and the big one
- Encrypted credit card information
It is important to note that the Valve (at this stage) do NOT have any evidence that the intruders got a hold of
- encrypted credit card numbers; or
- personally identifying information
Additionally, there is no information (at this stage) that the credit card numbers or passwords were cracked, or that there has been any credit card misuse.
Naturally, Valve is in damage control at the moment as this is a fairly major breach of their security protocols.
To date, Valve confirmed that there is only a few known forum accounts that have been compromised and accessed by the intruders (as the forums were shut down to prevent unauthorised access).
Once they clean up their security measures, Valve confirmed that they will be requiring everyone with forum access to change their passwords upon next login (and of course, the recommendation is that if you use the same password for other services, you change those too.)
No need to change your Steam account password as these are separate from the forum passwords, but they are suggesting that you change that password as well.
The Steam forums remain down at this point and you can assume they will remain so until the security holes are plugged.
Bit tough to know if your account was compromised at this point, but best to keep an eye on your financials until this all blows over.
