Gabe Newell: Hackers ‘Probably’ Got Your Data

Many hacks occurred last year, and all at big companies; Sony among them. Steam, despite it’s generally good relations with gamers, wasn’t left out, and was hit with a hacker attack last November.

Now Mr Newell is saying that it’s ‘probable’ that the culprits have obtained a Steam backup file, including Steam usernames, e-mail addresses, encrypted billing addresses and encrypted credit card information.

Now the last two seem more worrying than the first; billing address and credit card details? That’s more than enough to screw you up good. But the key word here is ‘encrypted’, which means that even with the details, they need a lot more to decrypt and read the information.

Gabe’s relaxed attitude suggests that hopefully they’ll never crack the data.

You forgot to mention the part where its transactions from roughly 2004-2008. By now almost any card should be expired. So it isn't like them having the card info even matters, either, as the CVS/CSN/Whatever you want to call it should have changed, even if you dont regularly ask your bank for a differing card number.

Many credit cards (mine included) have a 5 year expiration date, so better safe than sorry!

My steam account didn't exist in 2004-2008

I've had my account since around 06 I think however I didn't star using it(start buying games from steam) before you could download Portal free (for a limited time) don't remember when that was though
