1,000 Users Are Getting The Linux Steam Beta |
Listed in: Steam Tags: beta, Linux, Steam, Ubuntu, valve
For many of us Steam has been around for what seems like forever. Managing online gameplay, supporting a vast and growing community and allowing us to purchase digital copies of some of our favorite games all from one place for Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android. I’m sure some of you already know it will also be available for Linux in the near future.
Valve has been working on a Linux version of their Steam service for what we can only assume has been a good amount of time despite their earlier protests about the project even existing. One can only assume we are getting closer to a full release of Steam for Linux as they will be conducting a closed BETA for a lucky 1,000 users. Those lucky few will be testing the client and a Valve title that has yet to be named.

Those of you lucky enough to get in on the BETA there are some things you should know. First is that the Beta will only support Ubuntu 12.04 and above. The second thing is that this is intended for experienced Linux users "For those new to Linux, we recommend waiting for a subsequent release where more features are implemented along with improvements to the user install experience." Last but not least is that the newly BETA tested service Big Picture Mode is not going to be available during this BETA.
