Next Portal 2 Patch to Include In-Game Level Editor

The Portal 2 authoring tools have been available for some time, but if you’re like me you probably downloaded them, installed them, fired them up and then immediately shut them off once you realized how overwhelming it would actually be to build a level in the editor. I’ve always loved Halo’s Forge mode, but the authoring tools for Team Fortress and Portal have remained a little out of my league.

It looks like Valve is hoping to change all that, recently announcing that their next bit of downloadable Portal 2 content would include an in-game editor. Valve also indicated that you’ll be able to design levels for both single player and co-op, opening up the depth of design pretty far for amateur level builders. If you’re not into creating your own levels but still want to get some new challenges for your Portal gun, you’ll be able to play any levels created by users, as well as vote on them based on how much you enjoyed your experience. With a robust player community, this is sure to lengthen the shelf life of the Portal series dramatically – as long as there are new puzzles to solve, you’ll always have something to look forward to.
