Test run: GeForce 8800GTX |
Ó
Yes, we're talking about THE nVidia GeForce 8800GTX (or "G80") that got some guy's account suspended for spilling a couple of DX10 Crysis videos. By the way, after watching the videos, you did remember to wipe off that waterfall of drool dribbling down your chin, right? Good, because it's time to snap out of that trance and put some hard numbers to the G80.
Conveniently for us, DailyTech puts the G80 through its paces against its closest competitor, ATI's flagship Radeon X1950 XTX. The benchmarking tests on the Futuremark 3DMark06 show that the G80 scores 59% higher than the X1950. Not surprising, says DailyTech, considering that the G80 boasts a lot of power. Games like Half-Life 2 and Quake 4 just "love" what the G80 is capable of.
How much juice does it take to pump out that much power? Testing power consumption, DailyTech found that the G80 consumes only 24% more power than ATI's flagship at idle. When the cards are revved up and loaded for bear, the difference drops to only about 4%, says they. That's some efficient use of power - even if it is 450 watts flowing to the card.
Some specs: The G80 is equipped with 768MB of GDDR3 video memory; core memory clocks at 575MHz, memory clocks at 900MHz. The 8800 series packs 16x anti-aliasing (all on a single card), and nVidia's Quantum Physics Engine. With all its power, the G80 requires two PCI Express power connectors and two expansion slots. With two SLI bridge connectors rather than the traditional one, users can choose to equip up to three G80 cards.
That's the G80 for you. Have fun with DailyTech's pictures of the sweet mother. But if all we've said above are just meaningless numbers to you, jump back to the Crysis on DX10 article here to watch and download the clips again. They do a better job of showing off the G80's raw power than numbers ever could.
