Meat Boy Pirates Pay Up for Respect |

After an interview with IGN last week, Team Meat, creators of ther incredibly fun and popular Suepr Meat Boy, were emailed and contacted from gamers who had pirated the game and wished to purchase legitimate copies. IGN talked to Edmund McMillen, apart of Team Meat, who previously had said that he "didn't care" if people pirated their game and that using "crazy DRM" and screaming "Piracy is bad, don't do it", isn't any way to solve the problem.
The interview from the previous week outlined the fact the Team were happy with their financial success but also wanted to make it clear their place in the current market and how there was only so much companies can do to stop piracy. One of the best quotes I've heard about the piracy trend is that of comparison to bootlegging alcohol at the beginning of the 20th century with alcohol and for sex and pornography in the Victorian era and the late 1980's.
Edmund McMillen found the response incredible saying "When you show the public respect, they give you that respect back". He was honest with the response saying some gamers bought the game out of "guilt, but others...out of duty and respect" but he was realistic about how digital distribution can be a positive for developers, who really need to wake up to themselves, "There's no damn overhead for digital games... let's get realistic here, there's no reason to spend 60 bucks on a digital game when it's 65 bucks in store".
McMillen's honesty and creativity with Team Meat have really furthered the medium with the entitled commitment to fun and enjoyment of video games, beyond the point of another passive past time.
Is this the kind of respect gamers want, not just from Indie Dev's who take a dignified craftsmanship with their games and a fine pricing scheme, but also big companies with big AAA titles and big prices? Not to sway your answer there...
