Okay, Internet, it looks like it’s time for another excitement intervention. Over the weekend, some 4chan users were, for whatever reason, given a tour of Valve HQ. One of the nerds in question asked Gabe Newell if he was working on a new game engine, and he said, “Yes.”

And then the web exploded. “OMG SOURCE 2.” “OMG HALF-LIFE 3.” OMG GABEN HAX INTERNET.”

It was kind of ridiculous. So let me just throw a little water on this fire by presenting the actual question and answer, free of the Internet’s rumor-frenzy:

Fan: Is Valve potentially already working on a new engine? Source 2? Could or… could not be?

Gabe Newell: We've been working on Valve's new engine stuff for a while, we're probably just waiting for a game to roll it out with.

Fan: Is it going to be more than just an extension to Source? Is it an entirely new engine?

Gabe Newell: Yeah!

You’ll note there that Newell doesn’t say “Source 2,” just that Valve has been working on “new engine stuff.” He also doesn’t say anything else about any other games, so try to calm the hell down. Remember that this is Valve we’re talking about—they very well could have been working on “new engine stuff” for ten years, with ten more years to go.

But yes, there is development occurring on some sort of new engine. If you want to believe it’s Source 2, go right ahead.
