WTF is Valve Up To. They are Building Something. But What? |
Listed in: News Tags: Doug Lombardi, Gabe Newell, Steam, valve
Last month there were rumors flying all over the place about the supposed “Steam Box,” a game console developed by Valve. While those rumors were eventually quashed, it does appear that Valve has some sort of hardware solution up its sleeve—at least, if we’re to believe the company’s job listings.

A new entry on Valve’s website outlines the need for an electronics engineer to assist with “input, output and platform hardware.” The entry goes on to say:
“For years, Valve has been all about writing software that provides great gameplay experiences. Now we're developing hardware to enhance those experiences, and you can be a key part of making that happen.”
"Join our highly motivated team that's doing hardware design, prototyping, testing, and production across a wide range of platforms. We're not talking about me-too mice and gamepads here - help us invent whole new gaming experiences.”
Before you start planning your Valve console release party, you should remember that marketing director Doug Lombardi confirmed the studio was building hardware boxes for the purpose of testing, but wasn't planning to bring anything to market any time soon.
Then again, there’s always the future. Like Gabe Newell said when asked about making hardware, “We think it's important enough that if that's what we end up having to do, then that's what we end up having to do."
Would you buy a console developed by Valve?

I would probably buy a console from Valve if it had:
Video game modding support
Next gen hardware that far surpasses the Xbox 360 and PS3
A good amount of exclusive games
A relatively affordable price(not over $900)
A sleek and easy to use interface with options for customization
If it didn't have the above things, in my opinion, it would be pointless to buy their console since we already have 3 other consoles to choose from.

Nope. I already have a PC.

If Nintendo ever goes down (hopefully not) I could see Valve come in and take over their spot.

Their consoles are one of the only ones left with good games that aren't FPSes...
