World of Warcraft Drops Another Million Subs |
Listed in: News Tags: Blizzard, diablo iii, Mike Morhaime, Star Wars, the old republic, World of Warcraft
World of Warcraft is still the undisputed king of paid MMOs. Despite Blizzard’s confirmation that the game has lost a whopping 1.1 million subscribers since February, the game still holds an impressive 9.1 million active subscribers. As a comparison, if Star Wars: The Old Republic lost 1.1 million subscribers, it would be about 400,000 in the negative.

Reasons for the subscriber drop could be attributed to the age of WoW, player disinterest and an increasingly competitive MMO field, but Blizzard is positing another theory: Diablo III. Blizz president Mike Morhaime had this to say: “We’re also seeing that a number of players took a break from WoW to play Diablo III.”
Blizz also pointed out that subs always tend to dip in the months before a major expansion. However, WoW hasn’t dropped below 10 million subscribers since 2008.
We’ll just have to see if cute, cuddly pandas are enough to bring the players back.
